Sources: #Cubs are looking at Josh Reddick. Bat coming around after missing nearly 6 weeks with fractured thumb. Theo drafted him in Boston.- Morosi

I mean, I get the desire for another left handed bat. But unless Contreras will be catching nearly full time, I will not be happy about the move.

How about 3/5

Montero most of Arrieta's and Ross for Lester obv.

Reddick has been a very good hitter the last two seasons.

Meh, as always, it would depend on what we have to give up to get him. If it is a small package, then the more talent the better.

Reddick has been a really good hitter the last two years. His defense has graded out poorly in RF this year but I'm gonna hope that's an anomaly as he's been good to not too bad in the past.

Would be a nice lefty bat to throw in the lineup.

Hmmm, when Soler and Fowler come back, isn't that outfield gonna get real crowded again?

If they're going after a guy like Reddick, I really think Soler gets dealt.

Which I guess is my point. If we get Reddick, it probably means some other bigger trade has happened.

Soler for Hill and Reddick

Yes please. Even though I don't think that'll be enough to get it done. That would make the OF defense in Oakland the worst in baseball. Khris Davis in LF, Coco Crisp's corpse/Billy Burns/Smolinski in CF and Soler in RF. I watch a ton of A's baseball and this would make it more painful.

I guess I'd do that but it would bum me out to trade Soler for 3ish months of two guys who are good to very good but not great

Damn. That's interesting.

Interesting but seems against Theo's MO to trade young cost controlled talent for 2 rentals, even if they are looking to move Jorge.

Also I know everyone is aware of the fact that he has fairly extreme splits favoring him hitting against RHP, but holy crap are his splits cartoonish this year (big SSS disclaimer)

vs. RHP: .966 OPS (177 PA)

vs. LHP: .417 OPS (60 PA)

True, but Theo can work around that narrative by signing them to multi year deals. (I get that they'd be acquired as rentals though, Theo could still talk around it)

Yeah, but Soler only gives you about 3 months of terrible to mediocre each season anyway.

The best way to make a deal in your favor is to go against the conventional wisdom of what you like to do.

Did you get that from Trump's book? Because it doesn't make much sense.

Putting the logjam acquiring Reddick would create on the side for the moment..... Shouldn't/wouldn't he only cost something like Jeimer and Zagunis or Dewees and maybe throw in Szczur since he's certainly out a spot and Reddick is a 2-3 month rental? Edited by Cubswin11

With the pen recently reinforced by Montgomery and Edwards' arrival, and with the rotation not lacking for back end options with Warren showing well along with Matusz, I only want to make another deal for someone who is really good and has few question marks. Or in other words, don't play around with marginal upgrades like Reddick, Hill, Shoemaker, Abad, etc. If you make a deal, go big with a CarGo, Archer, Gray, Miller, etc.

Is Cargo really that much better than Reddick? Especially considering he's owed $20 million next year.

Josh Reddick

2014 - 117 wRC+

2015 - 117 wRC+

2016 - 123 wRC+

CarGo

2014 - 83 wRC+

2015 - 114 wRC+

2016 - 124 wRC+

???? both have had injury issues over the years, both are kinda iffy/not great in the outfield

Accounting for ballpark is important, but I will absolutely take CarGo being a fair bit better than Reddick with the bat over the next few years. Cargo is also not a rental.

That said, I don't really want to trade for a position player at all, so CarGo is more of a placeholder in the absence of a more appropriate target that would actually be available.
