Did I miss Federowicz being DFA'd? Why now, do they actually plan on letting him play more than once a week?

I'm guessing Ross is getting demoted to just catching Lester and coaching Contreras.

Is Davis Ross the one with the 1.2 WAR or the -0.2?

Montero has always seemed like a good clubhouse guy, and if anyone can manage this situation it would be Maddon, but I still wonder how Montero will respond to only starting 1 or 2 games out of 5.

I'm guessing this is just until laStella and soler come off the dl. At that point two of Coghlan, Almora, and Contreras are gone/sent down.

If his back is still as bad as his performance suggests, he should be just fine.

What about Szczur?

He's already back, no?

He is, but is he out of options?

What difference does that make? Ross has never had a WAR over 1.9 in his career, and he's only touched 1.0 a few times. Most folks here were hoping he would retire before last season was even over.

Yeah, Miggy has sucked this year, but we're talking about a small sample size. He has a much better offensive track record than Ross.

I think this says more about Montero's health than anything about his performance. I suspect the back is lingering, its affecting him defensively and offensively, and they know that Ross is a part-time player at best. And Federowicz isn't a major league player.

I guess they think they can give him enough work to make it worthwhile for Contreras.

I'd assume that Montero is going to be starting more like 2-3 games out of 5, at least until Contreras can prove he's not going to flop offensively or defensively.

Yes, Szczur is out of options.

1.4 wins over replacement-level.

That doesn't answer my question.

The question is what is the significance of David Ross out-playing Miguel Montero over a 100 AB sample size at the age of 46?

It literally answered your question. The difference, thus far, has been 1.4 wins.

I doubt he's here for good honestly. My guess is they do want him working directly with Montero and Ross on framing and also getting to know the pitching staff. He'll get a start or so a week, likely pinch hit and stay in the games late.

He's killing it SO HARD in AAA though, that I can see them saying they need to reward him. He gets some AB's, learns the staff, and gets valuable time in with elite framers/game callers.

If he pushes the issue, he'll stay up and that's a great thing. If not, its preparing him for next year, when he takes over. Win-win.

I think he's here for good unless he struggles badly. That doesn't mean he's starting every day or even the majority of them, though.
