He's already done more cool things in the week he's been up than Soler has the last two regular seasons combined.

I take it you're saying regular season.

Derp. I need to do one thing at a time.

i think Kris Bryant even topped Hamilton (or possibly Dee Gordon i'm thinking of) for max running speed; it seems counter-intuitive because of disparity in short-burst acceleration between the two that greatly impacts SB totals for instance, but with a longer stride it makes some sense

edit: found the comparison- it was 2 at-the-time-recent triples Petriello compared to Bryant's to contextualize speed

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/124212824/chicago-cubs-rookie-kris-bryant-statcast-top-speed-triple

Bryant, May 12

Top speed: 20.89 mph

Home to second: 8.34 seconds

Home to third: 13.77 seconds

Acceleration: 11.1 seconds

Dee Gordon, May 5

Top speed: 20.76 mph

Home to second: 7.85 seconds

Home to third: 11.64 seconds

Acceleration: 5.8 seconds

Lorenzo Cain, May 6

Top speed: 19.04 mph

Home to second: 8.47 seconds

Home to third: 12.67 seconds

Acceleration: 6.1 seconds

and i see here acceleration shows time to reach top speed, so yeah that's quite a contrast

Remember that one time when someone laughed at the idea that Almora had speed?

i remember when someone found it funny to say someone whose speed has always been talked about as a knock would be put on the playoff roster for speed like he's billy hamilton or quentin berry or something coming in to steal a base down 1 in the 9th.

Heh, yeah...just was amused since that statcast video came so soon after that conversation.

speed could also be scoring from 1st on a 2B / scoring from 2nd on a 1B, no?

i guess...but we have a bunch of guys who can pull that off well on the roster already, don't we? :dontknow:

Baez & Szczur are comparable but i think the idea was he'd maybe make the playoff roster over somebody like Coghlan or La Stella, who are mostly worthless as runners and borderline defensive liabilities

i'm not really trying to make a thing out of this, but i just wanted to point out that as far as scoring from 1b on a double or 2b on a single in a key spot, i'd feel more than fine with and wouldn't think about substituting for any of the following, in no particular order:

heyward

bryant

russell

baez

almora

szczur

probably rizzo unless it was a really desperate situation

ditto for zobrist

Team David here. Almora can certainly add value with his speed. He can do it by showing range in the outfield, going first to third, scoring from first on a double. He can add value by taking a base on a passed ball... wait, um. He might even chip in some value with 10+ SB. But the idea of him making the playoff roster because of his speed is a completely different story. Those previous things are things that he does that make Almora valuable. But, the idea of adding a guy for speed in the playoffs means that, well, that's really the only thing you are concerned about. And as such, there are much better options. For Almora to add value with his speed, he not only has to be inserted into the game, but the situation has to dictate it. A guy like Dave Roberts, or a Quintin Berry, is able to dictate those situations himself. Completely different story. You would be adding Almora to the playoff roster because he is a valuable asset, with a lot of his value coming from his speed. You wouldn't be adding him simply because of his speed.

i believe raw said speed and defense, to be fair...i just innocently/smart assedly pointed out that it was funny to mention speed when the thing with almora was always that he wasn't particularly fleet of foot

The major league qualified leader in UZR/150 is Kevin Pillar at 32.8 (Heyward is 3rd at 30.8). In a 96 inning sample so far, Almora is more than double that at 67.8.

I think it's pretty safe to say that his defense is as good as advertised.

Actually, this would make a pretty fun article, too.

i really want him to have crazy range less because it would be good for us and more because i can add it to the make fun of kyle list
