lol at Clayton Richard dutifully earning a run there

I almost feel bad for Richard because not only has he been bad, but he's had horrific luck on ground balls. I mean, he's gonna get DFA'd regardless, but his poor performance has only been compounded by bad luck.

How many Cubs shutouts have been ruined in the 9th inning? Seems like more than there should be.

to be fair, that's because a lot of those shutouts are being won by several runs and thus are being protected by the crappiest part of our bullpen

I don't think that was earned.

Cubs pitchers, by total % of pitches hit at least 100 mph.

Clayton Richard sucks. It doesn't matter too much that he gets ground balls, when they are all smoked.

I was just playing around, and was amazed at how much that list changes if you change the exit velocity to 95 mph.

Yeah, small sample sizes and all, you can't read too much into things.

I only use 100 mph, because that's kinda the threshold where the damage really is amplified. The league average slugging % on balls hits 95-100 mph is .661. Bump it up 5 mph to 100-105 mph and the league average slugging % is 1.150. Regardless, Richard gives up the highest % of 90+, 95+, 100+. He's just horrible and guys hit him hard.

I buy fielding-independent metrics for most guys, but once you get to the margins and get guys like Arrieta on one side and Richard on the other, I kinda throw those things out, especially on the wrong side (Richard's). Guys like Brian Schlitter and Clayton Richard look a lot better when you assume they do things at the league-average rate.

Feels like it, but that's probably recency bias.

There have been at least 6 instances this season, including 3 by the Phillies alone... there was also a game against Pittsburgh that was not close and the Pirates scored their lone run in the bottom of the 8th

If the Cubs finish the year 52-52, they will end up 93-69. And probably still make the playoffs.

The team that would currently be first in line to pass them into the playoffs would be the Dodgers, who would have to go 62-40 (99 win pace) to pass a 93-69 Cubs team outright, and that's if they don't pass the Giants first.

Does this mean we are good? Like do we a shot at the playoffs?

Worst loss and the 2 runners up:

2nd runner up: May 11th vs. San Diego. Cubs had a 4-2 lead into the 7th, Cubs were cruising toward their 8th straight win. In the 7th, Hendricks gets the first 2 outs easily, then an innocent little bunt single sends Hendricks to the showers and then the Cubs implode giving up 4 runs and losing 7-4

1st runner up: May 3rd vs. Atlanta. Cubs are somehow stymied by the hapless Braves until the 8th when they score 2 runs to trail by 1. The Cubs come all the way back in the 9th off a Russell single, but then Rondon comes in and loses the game in the 10th.

Winner: May 24th @ St. Louis. No need to elaborate on this one.

What the what.

I want to punch this post so badly.

I don't even have any idea what that May 24th game is. And I'm not gonna pull up Baseball Reference to find out.

I'm gonna assume the game he's trying to reference was the game that the Cubs led most of the way, Lackey gave up the tying dinger, and then in the bottom of the 9th Adam Warren gave up a golfball to get walked off on. It was the last time the Cubs lost in that "bad" stretch (wasn't that bad) and then they reeled off like 8 in a row.

I remember all this because I'm an insane person.

I barely know who the cardinals as I have low tolerance for irrelevant teams.
