i have a strong feeling we're all going to hate joe nathan pretty quickly.

Yeah, he's probably Peralta all over again. I've got real hopes on Matusz though.

The FO is kinda meh when it comes to the whole bullpen thing. I have no doubt the stats will show it's been fine more often than not, but it just feels like the Cubs end up with a LOT of chump relievers.

i think that's more a byproduct of them being smart enough to generally go with the shotgun/numbers approach and gamble on a lot of guys rather than investing disproportionately and ill-advisedly in "surer" things. there's gonna be some mottes, sorianos, etc. when they do that but, as you allude to, it hasn't really hurt us.

it's even easier to do that when you have a couple of guys like rondon and strop (who were originally acquired by pretty much that same philosophy) at the top.

How did Richard survive yet another move?

Warren at least had some value as a long relief mop up guy. Who fills that role now?

Uh, Richard....who was also stretched out during his rehab.

hell, after hearing what theo said about them finding/fixing flaws in his delivery, i've got (mild) hopes on matusz as a starter

yeah, that was a weird question

if richard has one niche he's perfect for in MLB, long relief mop up guy is it.

Yup. And Rodney and Cahill worked last year, too.

Yeah, that's a better way of putting it; constructing a bullpen is inherently such a gamble because you're dealing with a such a motley selection of talent, and it just feels like they've been bit by bad luck at least somewhat more than what's expected or hoped for.

If you look at every big league bullpen, you're going to find 2-4 guys who can be regularly counted on in high leverage situations, and the rest is all about throwing horsefeathers at the wall through a revolving door. If middle relievers were better, they'd be late inning relievers.

why are we mad at joe nathan?

He allowed base runners. You can't do things like allow base runners and expect to be a major league pitcher.
