I feel like the Baez MVP conversation is still relatively local though. I haven't seen him get much consideration from national or out of town writers.

Yeah...cant remember where but last weekend I saw an article about NL MVP Candidates and there were 5 names listed and Javy wasnt one of them. It was like Carpenter, Adenado, Freeman, Cain and someone else.

I know RBIs are dumb but I still want Javy to get like 130 of them. He's really becoming Manny-esque at the plate.

Manny Ramirez had a 14% career walk rate.

Yeah. I love Javy but Manny's a top ~20 hitter of all time. Him being Manny-esque at the plate would likely put him in conversation for best player in MLB every year.

The best part of that is all the replies crying that Carpenter isn't included.

RBIs aren't dumb. Comparing players based on them is.

I want my middle order hitters to rack up 120ish RBIs.

I believe the whole "RBI's are dumb" is a mantra that's way overdone. Like virtually any other stat it just needs to be examined in the proper context. Looking at any stat in isolation is a recipe for mis-evaluation.

Yeah, Manny isn't the best comp but Joe uses it and was just being lazy. I was always worried about his bust potential as a hitter but he's really become a force.

the only context in which rbis matter is one in which you remove rbis and look at other stats instead

JOE MADDON SAID SOME STRAIGHT NONSENSE ABOUT A PLAYER HE SHOULD REALLY HAVE A MUCH BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF BECAUSE IT'S KINDA LIKE HIS JOB OR SOMETHING WHAT NO WAY GET OUT OF TOWN I DON'T BELIEVE IT

Haha yeah. Maybe it's Joe's way of saying, "here's a hitter your should be trying to emulate, Javy."

Shoot for the moon.

what was the matter with maddon using the manny comp? He said if he ever laid off the slider low and away, meaning if he ever learned patience. It's obviously never going to happen but what the hell is wrong with making those comments about your player? Javy isn't exactly a guy who wilts under pressure.

I don't think anyone's worried about pressure; I just think it's funny in a, "y'know, that apple would be a really great apple if it was actually an orange," sort of way.

Yeah, it's a strange comparison because of how different they are. I think Joe (maybe?) mostly means he reminds him of Manny because of his bat speed or how the ball jumps off his bat or something -- just something about him and how he plays or swings or hits the ball or whatever.

But that also doesn't fall in with the "laying off sliders" part, because that wouldn't even matter in such a comparison. So I don't know. I've always been confused by it.

Ive said it since he was a prospect that Javy reminds me more of the skinny lightning quick mid 90s Sammy but playing elite up the middle defense.

Even mid 90s free swinging Sammy probably had better walk rates though. But thats more than made up for with Javy's defense, baserunning and premium position.

By both bWAR and fWAR, Javy is on pace to have what would be a better season than all but one of Manny's seasons.

Nobody was comparing them defensively, you dork.

I know. I was just pointing it out because it's cool as hell.

Holy horsefeathers that is amazing

Okay I didn’t read the responses. It’s very cool.

Yeah, didn't mean it as a comparison really. Just was looking at Manny's stats and remembering how good he was and it's crazy to me that Javy is on that level overall this year.
