I like to compare and contrast the dugout reactions. Pure joy on one side and pure Mets funeral on the other.

RIP Mets

The Mets bench looked speechless.

Thanks. Not enough depression to satisfy though. I was hoping for something more Brennaman-esque.

It was pretty great hearing Keith Hernandez ripping hard into Willson for the fake steal on the pitch before only to be interrupted mid-sentence by Javy sliding into home and having to admit it a smartly designed play. He didn't seem depressed though. That came three batters later when Contreras scored on the sac fly that barely left the infield and Hernandez sounded like he was about to cry.

Yeah, Keith kept going on about how Willson lucked into scoring as he "should have been halfway down the line there." Keith thought it was poor base running. They then showed a replay, focused on Willson, showing him halfway down the line and then rushing back to the base. Gary Cohen interjected that it looked like Willson noticed the second baseman having trouble with the ball and decided to go back to be ready for that exact outcome. And Keith reiterated he should have been halfway down the line.

I called both those plays live. It was awesome to see, especially happening in succession.

since manfred lets you just do an intenetional walk without throwing the pitches

can we just elect to do a javy strikeout to save time

He’s literally driven in more runs than anyone in the National League.

Probably all on dropped third strikes though right?

Javier Baez, last 30 days, but not counting today’s 0-4 with 2k:

99pa, 30.3% k, 1.0% bb, 211/222/389, 57 wrc+

Yeah it’s time to go back to protecting him a bit vs certain types of pitchers and get him starts vs only favorable matchups to try and get him going again and also to give us the best chance to win. Especially now that Russell is back.

(Whispers) every time he goes on a hot streak I quietly beg for a trade but am too much of a coward to say it out loud(/whispers)

IM SURE HELL COME AROUND SOON AND BE GREAT AGAIN

Most ML players (especially if they don't have a solid track record) are streaky and end up basically at their norm. It's beautiful to watch when Baez, Russell, and Heyward get in a hot streak, but when the season is over they will probably be back to the numbers we expected.

A couple days ago on my mlb app I had a notification for an article about Baez on pace to set some unusual history at the plate. I can't find it on the app anymore, and some googling has availed nothing. Does anyone have a link to the story, or at least know what it said?

Len mentioned something...I think it was something about him having a really high slugging and really low OBP.

Think the Yankees would trade us Gleyber for him? :(

And I love Javy but he's been seriously butt at the plate for a good month now. Needs a little refocusing.

this is a pretty weak take; he's seen 4th-most baserunners in the league and has 84 wRC+ split to show for it

I hate RBI. I was just making a simple point.

He is what he is: he's an incredibly annoying hitter at times -- and easy to expose with pitchers that can execute in key situations -- that is going to give you around an .800 OPS, great baserunning, and great defense in the middle infield. You're looking at a likely 2.5 to 3-WAR player at the end of the year that leaves you wanting a lot more (because it's in there, as we've seen), but it's still a valuable player.

I just don't really ever understand the complaining about him unless people think he's going to magically change. I prefer to enjoy his strengths and appreciate his overall value.
