Is Addison Russell a better player than Javy Baez? Just askin.

Javy might be better currently, but Addison still has the higher ceiling. Javy hits lefties a lot better and is bad against righties, Addison hits righties better and is bad against lefties. Javy strikes out less (feels funny typing that), but Addison walks more. Both are very good fielders. They strangely compliment each other right now.

Uh, no. Javy clearly has a higher upside. Although I think Russell IS the better player currently and maybe forever. But he can't touch Javy's upside. To me, the real question is whether Javy is a better defensive SS than Addy? I think I may have even saw a quote from Maddon yesterday basically saying that.

I don't really think that's true unless you're defining upside as this pie in the sky type of thing where Baez can just suddenly change into a disciplined hitter...as much as I'd like to see it, I think it's extremely unlikely. And if that is how you're defining upside, you might as well say "but what if Russell developed 40 HR power??"

Certainty matters, and there's a lot more certainty in Addison reaching more of his upside than the "upside" you're talking about with Javy.

Javy doesn't need to become a 10% walk rate guy. His upside at 6-7%, combined with the 30+ HR alone makes him a higher upside guy than Russell. Russell is safer and likelier to put up a higher career WAR, but I'd actually bet Javy puts up the single best season of either of them.

I'd take that bet.

Law thinks the Marlins gave up Chris Paddack for Rodney.......48/2 K/BB in 28 A ball innings at 20 years old.......Oh, and teams are hitting .098 against the guy. FFS.

To be fair to the Marlins, I imagine this Paddack guy is not replicating that performance in the majors. Not graduating HS until 19 is also kind of weird, no? I know draft studies haven't been big on those guys, particularly RHPs IIRC.

He may just be stupid.

I am absolutely shocked the marlins dealt paddack for a half a year of Rodney. That is craziness.

edit: I"m also very scared of the precedent this is setting for trade deadline relievers. We're going to pay a lot more than we're comfortable with.

I get the point, but technically there's a 4 mill club option on Rodney. Plus, their system is weak. I hope those things inflated the return a bit anyway.

I doubt it. Our team is run by Theo Epstein.

Wish he had remembered to re-sign Rodney.

I'm assuming this was said by Theo Epstein for the media on the other side of town: "I'm looking forward to seeing Kyle Schwarber playing for the Cubs on opening day next year." Was smiling as he said it.

At $1.6, he was quite the steal. But hindsight is 20/20.

God, me too.

2B Zobrist

LF Schwarber

RF Bryant

1B Rizzo

C Contreras

CF Heyward

3B Baez

SS Russell

Thats how I'd run 'em out there.

7 of those guys are going to be there for sure. IDK if the Cubs are ready to A) move a capable Bryant off of 3B or B) hand Javy an everyday job. Ideally, Maddon would work things the way he has this year with Baez and Almora basically being your interchangeable 8th/9th position starters. And that still means they'd have to move Soler and not re-sign Fowler. Not to mention figure out how to get Contreras in there when he's not catching. Great problem to have.
