I think everyone knows at this point that when you are dealing with baseball players, there is always that 1-in-10000 chance that they go supernova. Anyone who would have said around 1995 that "Sammy Sosa will never have two 60 HR seasons" would have holding a completely reasonable opinion and would have been utterly wrong.

That said, I've come around to the fact that I don't know anything about projecting baseball players and fell for the allure of believing there was a numbers-y formula to it that could be cracked by reading enough Fangraphs articles.

I know this is so short sighted and frankly meatbally, but dammit i want him signed even if were paying him 20 million at age 39

Part of me thinks the Cubs will not get into serious negotiations until after this season to see how his arm holds up after all the innings last year and presumably this year

this is pretty great...on baseball tonight right now, they're having a contest between braden and kurkjian. they have them up side by side on the screen while ravech recites crazy arrieta stats and seeing who can keep a straight face the longest.

Sounds like a bargain at this point

has he figured out all the secrets to generating soft contact? or have the babip gods blessed him with a fun month to mask the fact that he's no longer the guy he was last season, let alone the guy he was the second half of last season?

Honestly, I think two things are happening. Firstly, he hasn't been as sharp as he was last year. I'm talking about the walks mainly. His command has been a little off at times. Secondly, I think he has figured out the secret to generating soft contact. And he already had last year. That is by throwing ridiculous pitches with ridiculous movement, and being able to throw a bunch of different pitches equally as well. He's just a hard guy to square up. But, this year, he may have taken the soft contact idea to the next level, by realizing that he has Addison Russell, Javy Baez, Jason Heyward, et al,. behind him. If you have that good of a defense, and guys aren't going to inflict major damage against you, why not just let those fellas behind you do what they do? It's obvious everyone wants him to stay fresh. So let's save some bullets by having him get through innings quicker. Pitch to contact until you get in trouble, then try to wipe guys out.

He hasn't been quite as good, but I think he'll be absolutely fine, with his stuff and the defense we have.

I should have explained myself better. Obviously Jake Arrieta will be fine. I meant, in regards to him being God-mode Arrieta of last year. I think he can still be that good even if he gives up contact more often.

Yeah, I'm stretching for spots to use reaction gifs. I just chuckled at the word choice "will be fine".

Arrieta's K% is higher than it was last April, he's just giving up such weak contact when he isn't K'ing guys that he has fewer chances to tack on K's.

And without looking at any stats, I would suppose that his GIDP rate with men on base is also higher, lowering his K/9 rate even more.
