I've never been on 4chan. 4chan isn't the story.

This symbol is a racist symbol used by racists and has been for years and people know it.

It's definitely a racist symbol but it became a thing in large part because of 4chan and it really hasn't been a thing for that long.

https://www.splcenter.org/hatewatch/2018/09/18/ok-sign-white-power-symbol-or-just-right-wing-troll

The whole 4chan "let's make this a fake thing to pwn the libs, 'whoops', now alt-right people are doing it ironically/seriously" started in 2017. But Milo and co. started it back in 2015 as this intentionally nebulous dog-whistle along the lines of, "white guys chill like this" or whatever the hell goes on in their lizard brains. It's been festering for a while.

Sure, but it hasn't really been mainstream for a long time. It wasn't a focus of national media until somewhat recently -- the person sitting behind Brett Kavanaugh comes to mind -- and most recently, the NZ shooter.

It's not unreasonable for the average person to not know that it's a white power symbol and to be surprised that someone would do that on live television at a Cubs game.

And multiple people in the White House doing it, too.

I get what you're saying, and others who somehow mercifully missed this. I guess we're just at the point where more and more people are going to realize what's changed, and ideally knock it off.

those white supremacists media people in the white house? When was that, 2017?

I think it's very unlikely than any ONLINE person hasn't seen this before, and a big portion of the people scoffing at this story are telling on themselves

Things change. Things we saw as totally innocuous or even fun can be corrupted. It wasn't very long ago when some work colleagues were laughing at a few of us for being pissed when a guy at the office was sporting pics/stickers of a cartoon frog and smirking about it, while claiming we were being silly.

Even if the guy in the screenshot was doing the "look at my balls" game, can we agree that a functioning adult doing that on TV was inappropriate?

Here's a good overview on the circle game, fwiw:

I was talking about this incident with some guys at work and one of the guys said "oh, he did this?" and then I looked down and got a light jab. So it's alive and well lol.

completely anecdotal caveat:

I know of a guy who voted trump, followed bannon and glenn beck, touts bitcoin, loves to make incendiary comments "as a joke", shares "to own the libs" memes, who used the pepe as his avatar on a company's slack. Several employees complained, boss called him in for a dressing down, he disavowed any knowledge of the nefarious meaning. He's obviously lying.

That's what I think about every time I see somebody who uses this stuff pretend not to know what it is.

I'd say I was lucky I somehow managed to never encounter this, but it's not like it wasn't effectively replaced with any number of "games" that resulted in someone getting hit.

Do we know who this guy is yet? Usually a quick twitter/facebook scan will tell us whether he knew what he was doing or not.

I saw something saying he had some bad tweets. I'm sure the name is out there but I'm not bothering to look it up.

Of the 17 highest wOBA in the NL, 5 of them are Cubs. That's pretty a pretty ridiculous ~30%. Only one trending downward is Heyward, who has 3 xbh in his past 21 games.

Apparently he can only step up when things are at their most bleak.

The part that resembles him

Ok well I want receipts on this guy regardless. It's hilarious, I am seeing the exact same discussion everywhere. Even people I know who have discussed this previously are saying today "oh I've never heard of the OK sign until today!"

I’m going to be in Chicago the week of the 19th and I’m looking at going to a game vs the Phillies. What’s the best way to get a ticket, whether early or a spontaneous last minute decision if I have time?

Unless you have an objection to using StubHub...

I'm glad I can say that I am pleased with how the Cubs handled an off the field issue, which is rare these days.

I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt but there were way too many easy dots to draw the picture of white supremacy. Even if you didn't know about the symbol, the following reaction should not be comparing it to something else less sinister.

So Strop has an awful outing, and now he has an injury. I wonder if he was trying to play through something.
