Did Costas used to be good, or was I just dumber back then and thought he was better than he really was? Cuz I used to like him...and god I can't stand him now.

just saw this on mlbn...a little annoyed at costas recounting to them every bad thing that has happened to the cubs in the playoffs but i guess that [expletive] is inevitable

lmao Costas going full grandpa on them and recounting some mickey mantle story like it would just blow their minds

Bryzzo: wow uh. .... that's interesting

thought the same exact thing lmao

I like Keith Law a lot. I don't blame him for his dickish responses to all the Lake, Jackson and even Scissors questions. He loves the FO and what they've done. And as long as his snarky responses are directed at other teams, I love reading them.

other than having reached creepy looking both young and old looking guy status, i don't really get the strong costas hate

then again, i was on vacation and missed the game when he went nuts on strop

I liked him back in the 90's when he was doing NBA games, but since then he now has a weird, plodding cadence to how he speaks, like he's constantly trying to keep from burping. He's clearly doing it because he thinks it gives what he's saying more gravitas, but it ends just sounding literally like a tiny man trying to sound like he's a foot taller than he is. Then he slows things down even further when it seems like he's drawing things out so he can think about the most ponderous way to say something. Plus his stories and jokes suck.

Smack posted about this in the game thread. Here is the best quality I could find right now.

bryant is no todd frazier defensively

30 games into the year, White Sox fans and Hawk were bitching about not getting the credit or recognition for being as good as us this year. Its devolved into a "Frazier is better than KB at 3B" debate, evidently. While still wrong, I applaud them, because its a closer argument than their first one.

It'll be fun watching them start out next year, with the "our LOOGY is better" argument.....The battle will eventually be won by the White Sox though. And Hawk will never let us hear the end of it, when they reach the "Our 29 year old soft tossing swingman in AAA, is slightly better at getting grounders on 2-2 counts in the 7th inning of games that aren't decided by under 6 runs, than your guy is.

I mean, they're not wrong and it's pretty much what a lot of us have been saying all year. Yeah we are having an awesome, great year and are a clear cut above every other team but come playoff time it's still largely a crapshoot.

Funny this article got posted today, I pretty much had this conversation with my friends giving me horsefeathers/asking how nervous I will be in the playoffs with the Cubs and my response was pretty much I'll be nervous but I don't expect a world series win since it's not probable and like a 20% chance to happen and their response was oooh look already building in excuses and then I just said, "no that's just how playoff baseball works."

It's a dumb article because of course 100 isn't some magic "you win the world series" number.

What's more meaningful, imo, is the distance between the Cubs and the next best teams. It's not just that they're going to cross an arbitrary win number like 100...it's that they have been so much better than other teams.

Of course anything can happen in the playoffs, but I don't think looking at last years Cardinals that lost to a Cubs team that finished 3 games below them really tells us much about this years Cubs.

The worst part is that story had no relevance. All he did was tell them that Mantle hit behind Maris, as if anyone who grew up a baseball fan had no idea who the horsefeathers Roger Maris or Mickey Mantle ever were. There were no parallels other than the fact that Rizzo hits behind Bryant. If that's the connection he could've sat down with Tyler Flowers and Jace Peterson and said the same thing and it be just as meaningless.

I have ZERO issue with this article and wish there were more of them so that more people would understand this instead of having misguidedly high expectations and then considering the team a failure or saying they choked if/when they lose.

Can't tell you how many people I heard saying stuff like, "Same old Cubs," last year after the NLCS. Like, oh, really? Same old Cubs get to the league championship series and win 97 games on the backs of a bunch of guys in their early 20's. Yep, sure thing.

Ha, that typo aside, why even bring up the pre-playoff days? They have no relevance whatsoever. If this were 1950, we'd have a great shot at winning the World Series.
