We are going to wear some pitching staffs out.

Amazing. This will also allow the vendors more time to sells beers, which means more money for the Cubs to spend, which means yet more amazing signings...resulting in even MORE beer being drunk!

Also more pitching changes, meaning more commercial breaks, meaning more ad revenue, meaning new television rights worth fiftyleven billion.

So Zobrist or Heyward #2?

I'd put Zobrist there myself, but I just don't really care.

This has been a really good day.

I do feel bad for Javy though. I mean he can still be used, but not nearly as much now. If they trade him, what can we expect in terms of value on a return? Or will he just be stashed in AAA?

That isn't going to happen. At a minimum, he will be a defensive super-sub.

I could see Maddon close out games with a lead with Zobrist shifting to LF and Javy at 2B. That would be a hell of a defense.

Schwarbs vs RHP Zobrist vs LHP. Heyward 5 behind RIzzo/Bryant. But it's Maddon and his magical, wizardry ways. We are going to see a million different lineup configurations during the year.

LaStella basically never gets to start on this team. There is simply no such thing as a forfeit line up. No matter what the line up looks like on any non-Lester day, it will include 8 offensive monsters and two more waiting on the bench. And for Murton fetishists, I think this move slightly improves the chances that he makes the team as the 5th OF, as we no longer need a defensive minded CF wasting a space, especially since Baez might be able to fill that role, too. This offseason is playing out like a weird, unrealistic dream that would make me smile as I shook my head when I woke up. The season needs to start NOW.

LOL

I wonder how many other guys thought something similar. When he walked onto the field, a lot of guys are just kind of staring at him. Like an old friend just stopping by on the way to Florida that they weren't expecting to see and wondering why he's there.

Twitter says that a whole bunch of them thought he was just coming by to say goodbye. Which is understandable.

This also allows us to go into the year with a really small bench of just Baez, La Stella, Ross and Soler and then let the grand experiment of the utility bullpen take shape.

I think it was Theo or Maddon said earlier this week that Schwarber would catch one to two days every week.

That coupled with Soler in LF against smashing LHP's and the occasional day off for Heyward plus a little more frequent days off for Fowler I could see Soler still pushing 400 AB's.

With all this talent I definitely dont want to see Grandpa Ross catching Lester EVERY single start. Mix him in some but we need to be getting Schwarber behind the plate more often and get these other guys some AB's. Not Ross as much as he seems to be a great guy.

Late inning defensive OF of Fowler, Baez, and Heyward should be great too.

That seems a little bit crazy, as it handcuffs the number of pinch hitters and defensive replacements you can use. A bench that small would mean a lot of Wood and Hammel ABs in extras. 5 on the bench would be enough of an experiment.

Why the hell would we pinch hit for anyone in this lineup? ;)

JUST until Lester solves his BABIP problems. THEN we can go to the 4 man bench.

Eh, if Montero only ends up with 100 or so starts, that's not the worst thing in the world. He was on a skid going into his injury in July, and he didn't give us much of anything in the playoffs. Assuming Schwarber keeps developing behind the plate, giving him more starts and keeping Montero fresh for the stretch run works for me.
