So assuming that the 5 million dollar buyout is triggered no matter which side declines the option, was that a way to basically have an agreement that he wouldn't be given a qualifying offer, as it would cost the Cubs more than $20 million to bring him back for one season? Or am I off?

No. It's $8 mil this year and $9 mil next year if both sides opt in and $5 mil if either side opts out. So at most we have him for $17 mil the next two years and the least it's $13 mil for this year. If I understand Rogers tweets correctly.

Wasn't the Orioles rumor 3/35m? He left a lot of money on the table to come back if that's the case.

Whoever was on ESPNRadio reported they signed Fowler to be their starting CF and will move Heyward back to RF but will get time in CF.

Who was that someone, though? Given the options, I'd expect a lot of moving parts and PAs for all four players.

Jesse Rogers. Multiple tweets were posted on the last page.

I saw those, but most of them sounded like conjecture to me. I'm a little incredulous that they'd define all the roles right now, or essentially consign Soler to the RH portion of a left field platoon. We'll see, I guess.

Misery porn alert-Orioleshangout is pretty solid right now.

This is pretty much a metaphor for what they've gone through today (NSFW language):

If he had it to do over again, he certainly just takes the QO. I think he and/or his agent misjudged the market. Once it became clear he wasn't going to get the deal he wanted, re-entering the FA pool as part of next year's feeble class became the best option.

Unless he craps the bed in 2016, he'll do much better than 3/35 next year.

He's taking a gamble for sure. But if it's true they wouldn't give him an opt out he can probably get or top 3/30+ next year in a bad FA market with maybe no QO attached + the $13 mil from this year, it's not "that" big of a risk.

I bet Theo Epstein was reading Dave Cameron's grade for this offseason and was just so gutted by the criticism that he had to go out and sign Fowler.

1. Chicago Cubs

Grade: A

Given that the Cubs landed two deals (Jason Heyward and Ben Zobrist) on my best transactions list, then also got two honorable mentions (John Lackey and Adam Warren), it’s probably no surprise that I love their offseason moves. They got one of the three +5 WAR players available this winter, and paid the lowest price for the youngest one of that group, then added two of the better aging veteran free agents as well, before turning a superfluous infielder into a valuable piece of pitching depth.

I’d still have preferred if they turned one of their extra pieces into a center fielder, allowing Heyward to shift back to right field and reducing the pressure on Jorge Soler and Kyle Schwarber, but with that exception, the Cubs offseason was basically perfect.

The impact isn't as big, but I think I'm enjoying this as much as the Heyward signing just because of how unexpected and awesome it is.

Right. So let's say Fowler declines the option. He gets $5 million.

The Cubs could then decide to give him the qualifying offer after he declines his option, which would be more than $16. Thus, if they did that, he'd be guaranteed to make $21 million and there is no way the Cubs would tender him then. Thus, he will decline and be all but guaranteed to not have the QO attached to him.

Or am I reading all of this wrong and am just a bonehead?

Amazing. This will also allow the vendors more time to sells beers, which means more money for the Cubs to spend, which means yet more amazing signings...resulting in even MORE beer being drunk!

Some choice cuts...

Britton --> Soler and Contreras makes sense now. Just sayin....

I'll be happy to see the Cubs futility continue because of this. I know it sounds spiteful but man screw them.

He's dead to me

One year. Cubs offered the opt out AFTER the Orioles had an agreement. Bad business by Chicago.

We will look back on this and laugh when the Cubs predictably fail.

I don't think the Orioles will be doing any deals with the Cubs after this. I wouldn't either.

this is not a guy who wants to be an Oriole. Screw him.

I'm going to go a Nats game this summer just to give it to Fowler. Relentlessly. For 9 innings.

Agree, screw the Cubs and their tears will be hilarious given their sense of entitlement these days.

Screw him, this team will be just fine without the DIVA.

Does ANYBODY WANT TO PLAY RIGHT FIELD FOR THE ORIOLES?

ANYBODY AT ALL.

That's just the first 13 pages. They have like 28 pages devoted to him signing with the Cubs, not like an original thread about him signing that merged into him signing with the Cubs, like 28 full pages about Dexter signing with the Cubs.

In their favor, though, at least they aren't racist nutbags like the Cardinals fans were when Heyward signed here.
