Even taking into account that relievers are so hard to predict (see Strop, Pedro), that's an underwhelming return. If they bring back Jackson this is fine, although it's shuffling from one weakness (backup CF/CF defense) to another (LH bench bat/power).

i'm not sure that weakness is a weakness this team realistically has to worry about

I don't think it's an Achilles heel, but I didn't feel that way about CF defense either. La Stella as the only LH bat on the bench isn't ideal, and I'm probably TLS's biggest fan.

What's your over/under on number of games Kyle Schwarber does not start?

Sadly, you know there will be more games than we're comfortable with where Montero will be also available off the bench.

"He was shocked. Adopted a baby this offseason. Family had just arrived in camp. Big surprise."

Well damn...feeling kinda crummy for Cogs now.

Apparently I've grown a sentimental attraction and was just thinking again about how shitty Coghlan must feel. And then I see this. To go to the A's on top of it all...Yeesh.

I thought it was widely assumed he had indirectly or directly asked for this. He's made it clear in the past he wants a starter job, and after last season he probably deserves one. This move is probably best for his career now that he would have been our fifth outfielder, but still a bit depressing if he didn't see it coming.

Meh on the return. But still: http://gifrific.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Ron-Swanson-Says-Dont-Even-Care.gif

If he becomes something, then great. At worst, he's another option. And he's one that we control for awhile and can be stashed in AAA, where the options are thin.

But Brooks has proved in 257 2/3 Triple A innings, in which he went 19-8 with a 3.74 ERA, that he is strike thrower, as evidenced by his 1.6 walks per nine. More importantly, he is the kind of undervalued pitcher who is now in demand because of modern metrics. The Dodgers and Pirates, two other National League pennant contenders, were after Brooks. Why? The metrics from his Pitch F/X numbers—the spin and deception he has on the baseball—suggested to all three suitors that he is a back-of-the-rotation breakout waiting to happen. The Cubs’ valued his minor league metrics as suggestive of another Kyle Hendricks, a former eighth-round pick with underwhelming pure stuff who has gone 15-9 over the past two seasons for Chicago

I'm thinking that it wasn't so much about a return as Jed thinking out loud "now how to move Coghlan and move him quick," and Billy Bean kind of emerged from a potted plant.

I'm not sure I'd call him defensive minded, but last I checked, Chris Denorfia's a free agent. Maybe offer him an MiLB deal? He had his moments.
