horsefeathers the return of the poll spambot, but I just caught The Usual Suspects on TV a couple days ago for the first time in, like, a decade, and horsefeathers, that movie still holds up. Even when you know the twist it's just so well done from top to bottom. It has this weird, comic book-like heightened reality, great (weird) cast, plus the score is just incredible.

One gripe? Too many dudes holding their guns sideways. Instantly dates it to the 90's. Otherwise one of the great noirs, neo- or otherwise.

i watched it for the first time a couple years ago, knowing the big twist and expecting a lot. i didn't think it was all that good.

da bum replacing kyle

Where is Kyle anyway? There's an uneasy lack of conflict these days.

He got exposed to sunlight in southern california and burned to a crisp?

usual suspects for basically all the reasons mojo mentioned. not gimmicky at all

but umm how do empire strikes back and the game not make the cut and saw does? charlton heston made two movies with better plot twists than that, and both of those movies are pretty awful (planet of the apes, soylent green)

[expletive], I think Planet of the Apes is a genuinely good movie.

huh. i actually haven't seen it since maybe high school, but my main impression of it, other than the twist, is that it was "cheesy". i guess i'll have to give it another gander someday

soylent green is PEOPLE

seriously though, how does the game not get any love on this front

I mean, it's cheesy in that the effects look plenty dated, plus all the sequels and spinoffs are SUPER cheesy (though I find the scope and ambition of the sequels impressive, relatively speaking. For something that's looked at largely as camp or cheese, they sure don't pull any punches) but the first one, IMO, is pretty damn solid. Well directed and pretty good classic sci-fi mixed with 60's-style subversion.

my favorite thing about planet of the apes was the simpsons scene it inspired

"...from Chimpan-A to Chimpan-Zee..."

that's the obvious one and it's good, but i was thinking this one

Huh. That was unexpected.

"Ever hear of Planet of the Apes?"

"Uh, the movie or the planet?"

Usual Suspects for me. Primal Fear is another one that comes to mind that could have made the list, but certainly doesn't top Usual Suspects, Fight Club or The Game.
