IMB....also kinda seems like, for the type of thing you're doing, I could probably get away with FM22? I'm not a big enough soccer fan to have the outdated rosters really bother me, especially if I start by toiling away at some low level. Unless the features/gameplay is markedly improved in this one.

You absolutely can, I got 22 for the laptop but this season when I've played I've been gravitating back to 21 for the iPad.

I did the free trial of Apple Arcade and messed around with the app version of FM23 but there's so much detail built into the game that it seemed almost impossible to get the full experience through the touch screen on my phone. IMBs summaries are holding me over until I just decide to become a laptop gamer guy, albeit the nerdiest possible version of one.

honestly yeah. the hardcore fm guys like to rage about tactics that get broken from version to version but im not anywhere good enough to notice the difference. I still play a premier league save from fm20 and outside of a few small quality of life changes, there's not much difference between versions, and certainly not much difference between 22 and 23.

Well my free game sim was clearly too easy. I took Bournemouth all the way to winning a combined 12/15 Champions/FA/Premier titles in a 5 year span and having a billion dollar operating cash budget lol.

Then it totally lost that entire sim - nowhere to be found.

So well see if I picked up enough generic tactics for a more realistic sim environment on FM 23

OK, it's Feb 2032, im 24 matches into Year 2 in Serie A and im 15-5-4 and in THIRD. three points off the top.

I have no idea whats going on tbh. I've won my last 8 league matches by a combined score of 23-7. I sold my keeper to Fulham after last season and Tottenham poached my best CB in the january window and im still going strong. He was integral, lead the league in headers and last year scored 8 goals off corners because i just set my corner routine to far post and set him there.

Here's the craziest part, a few years back in Serie B, i loaned in this young striker from Milan. I got him for free the first year, then had to pay a decent fee and his full salary the second year. But he ended up running his contract down and signing with me for $475k like 4 seasons ago. Now he's 24 and he has 37 goals this year in 28 matches. He had a string of two 3-goal games and two 4-goal games in a single month, just crazy.

My board is building me a new stadium, taking my capacity from like 4500 or whatever to 19,000. I just beat Juve away 1-0, FM'ing the horsefeathers out of them. They got a red card and i immediately scored on my only shot on goal. I really don't know what to make of it.

Every time my board tries to give me a raise i ask for more scouts or more money for coaches so i have a decent staff now. I made like $60 mil off player sales and begged enough to get my payroll up to $22 million. If i can hang on and play in europe next year in my new stadium i should start really cashing in.

when was the last time a Pep coached team had 36% possession for a game. and won.

with regard to Champions League, the two-legged ties really do the knockout rounds no favors. all of these first games are so uninteresting.

Penalty or no? I didn’t think much of it at the time because it didn’t seem intentional and he was only a couple feet from the ball so ball played the hand. But the halftime guys both said they thought it should have been a penalty.

If we just made handballs like these indirect free kicks we could avoid some complaining from whichever side felt wronged.

Stone cold penalty for me. Arm away from the body in an unnatural spot and stops an attacking pass in the box. Unlucky given his proximity to the pass, but he didn't have to have his arm a foot away from his side and inches from the ground either.

Crazy first half at Anfield. The right side of Liverpool's defense is so suspect.

Both GKers made awful mistakes to give away a goal.

Liverpool falling apart in the second half. Assuming they don’t turn it around, this will be the fourth time in the last 6 seasons Real bounced them from the UCL. Final in 2018 and 2022 plus the QF in 2021. They won it in 2019 and lost to Atl Madrid in 2020.

The way the new format makes the most sense is if you think of it as a compromise between what is likely a requirement of the new TV deal(which is a huge financial positive for the league) to have more postseason inventory, a lack of an ideal competitive structure due to the size of the league(unbalanced schedules devalue the supporters shield), and the league addressing small competitive imbalances to straddle those two.

With that as a starting point, you can start to see the motivations. The 8/9 wild card motivates teams to finish higher up the table, and rewards teams that win their conference by getting an opponent on short rest. The best of 3 first round guarantees all playoff teams a home game, and makes it less likely that a single 90 minute bunker can create an upset between teams far apart in the standings(some will say 2 legs is better, but it has its own tiebreaker and first leg gameplay issues so IMO it's a wash). Not keeping the best of 3 after that round prevents the playoffs from becoming their own mini-season that drags on like can happen with the NBA and NHL.

It's not the format I'd choose, but in a league with 29 teams and a partner that just gave you an enormous revenue boost in exchange for more playoff soccer, I think they did well to avoid some of the worst fears that could come with that.

OK, my first three matches in the UCL (under the new format where you're all in one giant pod, etc)

Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0 win, beat their ass, had like 29 shots

A team i can't remember 1-1 draw, outplayed them but gave up a late equalizer

PSG 1-0 HOME WIN

I still can't believe it. my LW scored a goal in the 12th minute, real nice bender from just inside the box, then i just stymied PSG the rest of the match. Mbappe did nothing and the only real chance they had was $255m signing (seriously) Moukoko getting stymied in the last minute of stoppage by my 21 year old keeper. Moukoko's transfer fee alone would constitute my budget for a decade lmao

How does Ziyech not see red for this? The referee has the yellow card out right after the foul for Ziyech. Then after the red is downgraded, he still gets a yellow for the slap. So at the very least it should have been two yellows and a sending off. I think a straight red might have been a bit harsh but it falls in the “I’ve seen it given” category. I just don’t get how you forget to card the guy you were going to card at the beginning.

EDIT: Commentators post game saying the initial yellow was probably for Havertz (which he did receive) and not Ziyech so if that’s true I rescind my question.

Didn't see this but I have often had this thought - a player commits two yellow card fouls on the same play but gets one yellow.

The red Correa got for Athletico yesterday was absurd.

i think if you slap a player that hard in the face it should be a straight red, i couldn't believe he was able to come back out

I’m guessing he got the yellow because he got the shoulder first so the intent wasn’t to slap him in the face.

But it’s definitely surprising they overturned it. I don’t think that was a clear and obvious error to give him a red.

FM23 update vol. 10, things have escalated yet again

If you remember, I finished 4th in Serie A in 2033, putting me in the champions league (in my 4,200-seater lol)

i figured i'd come in and just get my ass stomped, make a couple million and call it a year. But the weirdest thing happened, despite being average in the league (late surge has me up to 6th with 11 matches to go and a game in hand) I'm destroying the UCL. Look at these results

First stage (for the record the UCL is using the future format rather than group stages)

Beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0 at home

Drew with Rangers 3-3 away

Beat PSG 1-0 at home(lol i still can't believe this. my best winger scored in the 16th minute and I held on, but it wasn't luck - i had 16 shots and 10 on goal)

Beat Dortmund 1-0 away

Beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 away

Beat Real San Sebastian 7-1 at home (lmao xG of 2.40)

Drew Man City 1-1 away

Beat RB Leipzig 2-0 at home

Knockouts

Beat Renne 5-3 on aggregate.

I'm in the quarterfinals now lol
