I think worrying about them winning is unnecessary.  Even if we get there, France will beat us like 5-1.

Which we wouldn’t because Spain will beat us in the QF first if they beat Portugal.

Soccer idiot, but yea after watching the Quansah replay again it seems like the "he struck the ball first / the ball lifted his leg" argument feels kind of weak. It felt like a pretty desperate attempt and so yea the ball forced his leg up, but only because he had to get so out of position to get contact first.

That said, the whole VAR replay/slow-mo arguement seems valid to bring up and question if that's really the standard.

Maybe I haven’t seen the right angle yet, but the penalty against Kane was way more egregious. I watched a slow motion replay and it was not clear at all whether or not Kane touched the ball. And if it’s not clear, then an obvious error hasn’t been made so the call shouldn’t be overturned.

I'm only upset that Trump would call FIFA and then they would just cave.  That's bad.  As I understand it there's an actual rule cited that allows them to do what they did.  So if that's indeed the case then nobody can say they made up a special rule just for the US.  Even if it's a first time thing, if there's a basis for it, then there's a basis for it.  FIFA should have simply done this review on their own, using the rule that they cited, without a Trump phone call.

I don't think anyone should be OK with the President of a host country making a call to FIFA.  It's a terrible precedent.  I guess FIFA is allowing Belgium to lodge their appeal too, so until game time I'm not taking it for granted that he will play.  They might reverse the reversal.  This whole thing has created a huge distraction from what has otherwise been an amazing World Cup.

This pretty well sums it up for me. And if people are being honest, if another countries leader stepped in and had a guy reinstated before playing the US the fans would be upset. I agree it shouldn’t have been a red card penalty. But that was the call.  A call from the president shouldn’t have changed that decision.

The only problem with that response is Jose pretty much always spoke. He’d say he wasn’t going to comment on <insert incident here> but then he just couldn’t help himself and would say something about it anyway. He’s Michael Scott trying not to say “that’s what she said”.

It was the right call for a red.

And I thought the ref acquitted himself well, especially considering the circumstances. You want a bad ref? Look no further than the Uruguay-France match.

Paraguay, and for real. That got completely out of hand

the second half of the mexico/england game felt like the wheels were about to come off at any moment.
