At this point I'm not even sure if it matters who we'd align with in the QFs.  Brazil hasn't looked to be in good form this summer and Colombia has been an absolute monster.  I know Brazil is still Brazil, just saying I'm not sure if the margin is big enough for me to care who we match up again if we advance to the knockouts.

Brazil has been poor for quite a while - they weren't even competitive with Argentina last year. Still, Vini will destroy Scally

France was on 4 points coming in so they needed to win to for sure win the group (no idea what the tiebreakers would have been had they and Netherlands tied).

France probably not too worried considering they get the 2nd place from group E, which is at best Belgium (no offense)?

Netherlands gets Spain or England (anyone know how that is decided?) or Denmark or Slovenia I suppose. Those countries won't be excited to get Netherlands,

Who could face who

The four best-placed: WB WC WE WF

A B C D A3 D3 3B C3
A B C E A3 E3 3B C3
A B C F A3 F3 3B C3
A B D E D3 E3 A3 3B
A B D F D3 F3 A3 3B
A B E F E3 F3 3B A3
A C D E E3 D3 C3 A3

B C E F F3 E3 C3 3B
B D E F F3 E3 D3 3B
C D E F F3 E3 D3 C3

In the above, WB, WC, WE and WF stands for the winners of Groups B, C, E and F, who are the teams that will play the qualifying third-placed sides.

Who plays who is pre-determined, so the final rankings of the table of the best third-placed teams is irrelevant.

As mentioned earlier, those currently going through, in alphabetical order, are third-placed sides from Groups A, C, D and E.

That would lead to these last-16 ties:

WB v 3E

WC v 3D

WE v 3C

WF v 3A

A, D, and E are in by my math. C seems next most likely but F or B still possible. so scenarios:

Spain most likely gets 3rd from E (who knows?) possibly Netherlands if Croatia pips last spot (seems very unlikely to me)

Group C Winner (England?) could get Netherlands  (most likely) Group F 3rd (?) or Group E 3rd - clearly England wants the latter 2 scenarios but enough to tank?

Group E Winner gets Group C 3rd, Netherlands, or Hungary

Portugal gets Hungary in first two iterations or Croatia if they sneak in.

I guess Hungary isn't in yet actually

Wild that Southgate went the long way to get Mainoo into the XI.

Should have been playing over TAA from the beginning of the tournament and replaced Gallagher, TAA’s replacement, at half time tonight.

Tiebreakers are in order: result of the match between the tied team, goal difference, goals scored and believe it or not: number of yellow cards.

I’m not watching the game but Serbia knows they can advance with a win right? Only 1 shot in the game and it wasn’t even on target.

Mitrovic more dives than shots?

Croatia is eliminated, right? and Hungary hanging on a prayer.

How fun would Belgium-Netherlands be?

Yes, Slovenia and the Netherlands are through, Slovakia/Group E 3rd and Hungary are currently in place to advance, and Croatia is eliminated.  The path for Hungary is Turkiye winning, drawing, or losing by 3+, along with Portugal not losing.  There's probably other permutations with wild scorelines from Group E that get them through too but not worth gaming out.

If Argentina doesn't sleepwalk tonight against Chile, Canada has a real shot to advance through this group.

I think that was Canada's only shot on goal. They were bad and lucky.

Fortunately for them, bad and lucky is enough to finish 2nd in that group.

Argentina advances but have seemed sluggish

I mean, two years ago Argentina lost their opener to Saudi Arabia and still won the World Cup.

You are correct.

All of those weren’t enough to separate Denmark and Slovenia, so they had to go to the next tiebreaker: ranking during qualification 🙄

maybe. they still have to get a result against Chile. Copa really only has two good teams - Argentina and Uruguay. Everyone else is hacktastic outside the US. Monday will be a good test for the US - if the game matters
