This has been a wild day of soccer news.  Marsch to Canada, Sergio Ramos maybe signing with San Diego, this guy signing for a Romanian club and then having his twin brother play instead, just all around nutty

One of those stories that I would be disappointed if it wasn’t true. 😂

Not just any Romanian club either. The second most successful Romanian club. Fair play to them both.

City’s 4 peat ranks only behind Lance Armstrong’s 7 Tour De France wins in sporting achievements. A hell of a feat.

Is this a reference to City doing this while having 115 Financial Fair Play charges?

Anyways, I remember being happy for them the first time they won with that amazing dramatic final matchday similar to how I was happy about the Warriors winning the first of their NBA titles but they've long since been the evil empire in English football no matter how much I enjoy watching Haaland and De Bruyne and respect Pep.

It is wildly impressive, but its dimmed a bit by being able to buy the best team in the world. Don't get me wrong, I know Chelsea and ManU and others have still spent insane amounts of money too, they still have to buy the right players, and they still have to win the games, but its not like they developed this roster

that's silly. all the big clubs spend like crazy. Comparing it to doping makes no sense.

I agree which is why I'm confused the comparison to Lance Armstrong was made.  Pep compared the 6 titles to the Bulls of the 90s which seems more apt I guess.  You can't compare something to Armstrong without there being as association with cheating.

That said big clubs spend like crazy but there are rules in place.  City apparently has 115 charges of overspending and the PL seemingly refuses to address it while smaller clubs like Everton and Forest are given swift points deductions for a single charge.

Most teams would be very happy with a first year manager whose team improved by 19 points, improved its GD by 23, improved its league position by 6 spots, qualified for Europe, and made a Cup final and a semifinal

But at Chelsea you get fired leave by mutual consent.

I wonder why they never get better?

to be clear, it is cheating. but not by the players. the players still accomplished what they did. depending how you view FFP rules, you can say the club didn't achieve it without cheating. But in Lance's case, he made the field not level for the actual athletes. FFP rules are stupid though - they aren't intended to rein in big clubs so much as keep small clubs from going insolvent. they don't level the playing field.

Good for Atalanta. Never won a Serie A (best finish was 3rd). This is only the 10th season they’ve played in a European competition and they’ve only made the semifinals once before today. This is their first European final. Their only major trophy is the Coppa Italia in 62-63 unless you want to count their 6 Serie B titles.

Nothing against Leverkusen but they’ve already got the league and should get the Pokal also. Though an undefeated season would have been pretty cool.

Atalanta have been all over Leverkusen tonight.

yea, this is a game that was coming. Atalanta deserved to win and as soccer10k noted - gotta feel really happy for that club, Not only his points, but also because they play such positive football.

I think it’s just because of the coefficient ranking. Bundesliga will have the Top 5 in next seasons CL because Germany will finish within the Top 2 in coefficient, with Serie A.

So if Dortmund finishes 5th in the league and wins the CL, they will qualify for next seasons CL by winning the competition.

So the 5th spot (for Germany being in the Top 2 for coefficient ranking) will transfer to the 6th spot (if Dortmund finishes 5th and wins the CL)

And no, I don’t believe the same would apply to La Liga (5th getting CL football if Real Madrid wins the competition) because La Liga will be outside the Top 2 for coefficient.

I hope that all made sense.

So a similar thing could happen in Italy. Atalanta is guaranteed a UCL spot due to winning the Europa League. They’re in 5th, 2 points back of Juve and Bologna but with a game in hand. If Atalanta finishes 5th, then their bonus spot goes to Roma in 6th. But if they jump to 4th or 3rd, Roma will go to the Europa. None of the teams have anything to play for as they’re all in the UCL for sure. There’s also a scenario where Atalanta loses twice, Roma wins their last game and makes up 8 on the GD and finishes 5th, which would give Roma the extra spot.

Can someone explain Vincent Kompany to Bayern for me? Two years coaching in Belgium, one year in the Championship (won the title) and one year in the EPL (19th). He certainly could work out. Zidane spent a year and a half with Real’s B team as head coach before getting the head job and that worked out. Just seems like Bayern could have done better with a more proven coach.

just not a lot of those guys out there

i dont have anything against kompany as a coach, but bayern should be able to win that league with just about anyone on the sidelines (im aware they didnt but it took a magical neverkeusen run to make it happen.) they probably figure we take a chance on a cheap young coach no one will be mad at us for getting rid of if he fails, and then we see if there's more experienced coaches available at that point

I'm not sure how much of this applies to Bayern specifically, but Managers matter about 10% as much as media and fans at large tend to believe, and this combines with a growing trend of front offices trying to consolidate roster building power by either making explicit structure changes(Slot being 'head coach' at Liverpool) or just by hiring younger/less proven managers that are more willing to take what they're given(Kompany seems like a pretty good example).

bayern finished third.

I would change proven to good. And not all coaches are created equal - coaches like Pep and Klopp choose their personnel to fit their system. Other coaches may be brilliant with making the most of what they are given. Some are great at managing egos (Zidane, Ancelloti).
