I believe if Spain evens it up Germany would go through over Japan at this point winning the GF tiebreaker by 1 over Japan.

Yep. If it ends 2-2 then Germany would have 5 goals scored and Japan would have 4.

If you told me before the Word Cup that Japan was going to lose to Costa Rica I would have bet so much money on them to be eliminated in the Group Stage and to finish bottom of the group. Instead they’re a couple minutes from topping the group.

Japan beats Spain and Germany to win their froup and will play Croatia. Spain finishes 2nd despite winning a game 7-0 and will play Morocco.

In the summer of 98, two of the Japanese kids on my soccer team (Yuji and Kenichi) in high school stayed in America for the summer to do summer school. We watched almost every game of the 98 cup together (DENNIS BERGKAAAAAMMMMMPPPPPPPP) and became really close friends. I've always had a soft spot for Japan's national team ever since. They have such an identity and it never changes, i really respect it

meanwhile lol

Costa Rica (1.70) 2-4 (6.35) Germany

Spain probably got the better deal there - Morocco, then Portugal, instead of Croatia, then Brasil.

i know nothing about this stat or how it's calculated but i choose to believe it is accurate and truthful

I don't know a ton about the technicalities of the game any more, but by the eye test he's been far an away the MVP of the US team in my opinion. Just the sheer amount of activity is impressive and he's got such quick feet.

Anyone watched the docuseries Good Rivals on Prime Video? I saw an ad for it but didn’t realize it was about the Mexico-USMNT rivalry. Looking forward to watching it now as long as it doesn’t dumb down things for the casual fan

From ESPN's preview of the US-Netherlands:

It's hard to allow for the possibility that injury isn't the reason Reyna hasn't featured more than the brief cameo against England, but let's go ahead and assume he is available. Why not let him play as the No. 9? Josh Sargent put in a workmanlike shift against Iran trying to hold the ball up, but Reyna can do that just as well -- if not better -- and is more of a threat. Maybe his pressing isn't what Berhalter wants, but Haji Wright appeared lost when it came to that instruction, too.

Someone who knows more than me tell me why this would or wouldn't work.

I mean, if Sargent can't go, I'd rather put Weah at the 9 and Reyna on the right wing, but overall it's not a terrible plan, and Wright didn't show much in the time he had on the field.

Even though this day is probably going to be slightly more boring than the rest, here are the scenarios:

Group G:

- Brazil is through, they win the group unless they lose vs Cameroon and blow a 3 goal differential to Switzerland

- Switzerland is through with a win vs Serbia or a draw and Cameroon loss/draw vs Brazil

- Cameroon is through with a win vs Brazil and a Switzerland-Serbia draw or Serbia win that doesn't make up a 1 goal differential.

- Serbia is through with a win vs Switzerland and either a Cameroon loss/draw to Brazil or overcoming a 1 goal differential to Cameroon

Group H:

- Brazil Portugal is through, they win the group unless they lose vs Cameroon South Korea and blow a 3 goal differential to Switzerland Ghana

- Switzerland Ghana is through with a win vs Serbia Uruguay or a draw and Cameroon South Korea loss/draw vs Brazil Portugal

- Cameroon South Korea is through with a win vs Brazil Portugal and a Switzerland-Serbia Ghana-Uruguay draw or Serbia Uruguay win that doesn't make up a 1 goal differential.

- Serbia Uruguay is through with a win vs Switzerland Ghana and either a Cameroon South Korea loss/draw to Brazil Portugal or overcoming a 1 goal differential to Cameroon South Korea

I don't think it would be dramatically worse than playing Wright, again assuming Gio's health(I think Matt Doyle pointed out he wasn't exactly running hard in his one appearance so far, so seems like a big assumption). Where I think this has the chance to go poorly is the Netherlands are gonna be in a 3 back setup, and while having Gio or Ferreira pull out CBs by dropping in can help disorganize the shape, it also means the striker's runs are gonna need to be very good to get on the end of any crosses. Gio's a smart player but he doesn't have the reps in that role to be in sync with who might be giving him service or to stay a step ahead of guys like Van Dijk or De Ligt.

So yesterday a favored team from the Iberian peninsula lost to an Asian side which meant that the Asian side went through at the expense of a group favorite and 2010 semifinalist.

And today we are now one South Korea goal away from.....a favored team from the Iberian peninsula losing to an Asian side which means that the Asian side goes through at the expense of a group favorite and 2010 semifinalist.
