Well the entirety of Argentina is getting drunk tonight. Glad Messi finally got a trophy for Argentina.

not just in Argentina either! Woot!

Audibly cackled at multiple Argentina players failing to rugby tackle Neymar in stoppage time once he decided drawing the foul was not going to help.

he just knew he couldn't get any more height on his dives . . . Lougainis would have been proud!

There was a dive midway through the second half in the penalty box that was pretty shameful. Clearly just looking for the PK and nothing else. But that’s pretty standard for him.

Kane and Sterling have been taking lessons on the diving apparently.

I can’t speak for Sterling but Kane’s always been a bit of a diver. Never liked that part of his game.

Switzerland beats France on PK

Spain beats Switzerland on PK

Italy beats Spain on PK

So clearly England going to win in PK.

EDIT: or not.

Didn’t like Southgate bringing Sancho and Rashford on so late just to take PKs. Seems like you’d want to give them a few minutes to run around and get some touches on the ball before taking a PK.

Non-soccer fan question coming so pardon the ignorance. Why don’t they ever shoot high on PK’s? Even if the goalie guesses the same direction you kick they’re not going to stop a high shot as they always dive parallel.

Non-soccer fan guess: fewer high kicks because of the risk of shooting over the goal?

yea, basically you want to make the keeper save it - the italian keeper is 6'5" so the window to get in above him is not that big and the risk of going over (or off) the bar is too high. Basically, each of those balls that was saved probably goes in if it's on the ground.

Sterling has definitely become one - also Salah. What's annoying is they throw themselves into the defender to make contact and then they get the call (though not in this game).

Does it matter how tall he is when he immediately dives to the ground whichever side he goes to?

The way you dive as a goalkeeper you arent committed to going to the ground when the ball is struck, so while you wont get to anything 6-7 feet off the ground, you can still get to stuff at chest level and thats a much easier save to make(think catching a line drive v. a ground ball in baseball). When you add in that going for height as the shooter is higher variance(the way you strike the ball puts misses at greater risk), you end up being safer aiming low and hard.

I had a similar thought after watching Italy pretty much dominate the game from the moment England scored until at least early into the first extra time period. Of course, Southgate set up to defend from the start with three central defenders, two wing backs and two defensive midfielders.
