Unfortunately, I think the length of the tournament coupled with the timing at the end of the club season is leading to a lot of teams conserving energy and sitting on 1-0 leads. Should be even worse with 48 teams.

This is a 0-0 game, and the player just missed. Wide open. Could be fatigue, could tension. Who knows, but a couple of seemingly easy goals just completely missed

They need a Nigeria win or draw tomorrow. A win would be ideal because then they could finish tied with Iceland on 4 points. A tie and they need Croatia to actually try because then they’d have to group locked up.

Doesn't really matter - they aren't going to win anything with that midfield. Similar to US, they needed to invest in younger players earlier.

Might've been a ton of people late getting back to their seats after halftime. Huge sections of midline seats were empty at the start of the half

Totally, though I get he's frustrated. The entire half has been in Costa Rica's end and Neymar has had half a dozen scoring chances that he's whiffed on

I did not realize that several Swiss players were Albanian, and that making Albanian celebration signs after they scored against Serbia was signalling to their comrades, many of whom are in Switzerland to...escape Serbian genocide. That's some kind of gratifying win to beat that country in a comeback.

Yep, that was a fun one.

 

We're also set up for Mexico to suffer a devastating elimination. They're in as bad of a position as you can be in while having won both games. If Germany beats South Korea by multiple goals and Sweden beats Mexico by any score, Mexico is out.

 

If Germany and Sweden win, they'll all have 6 points. If Germany wins by multiple goals, they'd be at least +2 on goal differential. If Sweden beats Mexico by one goal, Germany would be +2 at least, Sweden and Mexico would be +1. Germany would go through as group winner and Mexico would be out on H2H with Sweden.

 

It's a lot, but I don't think it's crazy for Germany to beat South Korea by 2+ and Sweden to beat Mexico.

today is the first day that the VAR really failed in my opinion. There was a clear foul for Mexico to recover the ball before their second goal and even worse was the missed penalty for sweden. Why the latter wasn't reviewed is beyond me.
