The USMNT is starting a terrible lineup tonight. They will probably lose.

The defense isn't great but that's because they've lost an entire back line's worth of depth. Swapping Jones for Lletget doesn't seem like a huge difference in the attack from the team that scored at will on Honduras.

I just think that even with the injuries they have better options than Zusi and Ream.

Is Cameron hurt too then? Don't really care about Jones playing. Wish they had somebody better than jones tho. Actually isn't sasha kleston a better player at this point?

Argentina struggling mightily in qualification. They will get in surely but still they sit 5th with Ecuador with 4 games and it all to play for. Also will have to do it without messi (not that they really need him with aguero Higuain and dybala available.

The Dutch are really in trouble.

Argentina should be fine. They have at Uruguay, home to Peru, home to Venezuela, at Ecuador. Win the two home games against 8th and 10th gives them 28 points. Ecuador is at Brazil, home to Peru, at Chile and home to Argentina. So they'd have to beat Peru, Argentina and one of Brazil/Chile to get to 29. Paraguay has at Brazil, at Chile, home to Uruguay, at Columbia, home to Venezuela. They're only on 18 so they'd need 4 wins.

Netherlands needs to hold serve at home against Sweden and Bulgaria. Do that and they should be fine but they don't have much margin for error.

I think conmebol is a two game agreggate for who gets in for 5th and 6th place after qualifying games. So if you describe happens then they would probably still need to maybe get a result at 10,000ft in Ecuador (after getting rolled at altitude v Bolivia). Obviously they should pass chile, Uruguay or Columbia but it doesn't look like they will based on their form. So this is not a dream scenario.

Wiki says top 4 qualify automatically and 5th has a playoff with Oceania. So realistically, Argentina would have to go win, loss, draw in their next three matches then lose to Ecuador in the last round to miss out.

We're playing some truly suspect defenders but I'm still too in awe of Pulisic to care.

He's getting the LD treatment. Just getting hacked all night, but his engine and fire is next level.

The goal was bad luck even if that back line is horrible. Please get zusi out of this game arena.

Zusi, Ream, and Omar all together. How do we not have other options. Zimmerman would be better than all 3 of them.

The only real concern from last night is that yet again the Bradley-Jones midfield pairing was useless. The entire back line was the second team (if that), so Zusi being useless should hopefully not be a long-term issue. Would have liked to see Zimmerman in back somewhere, but if Brooks/Cameron/Yedlin/Johnson are healthy, those 4 plus Villafana/Gonzalez/Ream/Zimmerman should be okay for back line depth.

Altidore was invisible last night too, but the midfield couldn't generate anything aside from Pulisic. Nagbe couldn't get anything going, and Jones/Bradley like I said was poor. The US only looked a bit better in midfield after subbing out Jones for Acosta (after Nagbe had already been subbed for Bedoya).

The critical thing for Arena going forward is to find a midfield combination that actually controls the center of the field in these qualifiers. Pulisic should be CAM every time out from now on. Bradley can be CDM, but he's got to show something more here, his quality has steadily declined the past couple years. Outside mids should be some combination of Fab, Nagbe, Acosta, Kljestan.

I think right now, the best 11 the US can send out there is Howard in goal, Villafana-Brooks-Cameron-Yedlin on the back line, Fab-Pulisic-Bradley-Nagbe in the midfield, and Wood-Dempsey out front.

Well, after that first interview, I wouldn't blame Schweinsteiger if he just boards the next plane back to Germany.

Actual questions from the Chicago media in the introductory press conference:

- Do you think you can help the Chicago Fire win the World Cup?

- What will it feel like for you when the Chicago Fire plays against Germany?

- Do you still strive to play for Germany?

The 2nd one was Wahl making a joke on Twitter, but still. Not a great look.

I actually couldn't get through the entire question it was so awkward. The World Cup one. The guy even doubled down on it. I understand we don't have a soccer culture here but that's absurd level of ignorance.
