Hachi machi the Sounders fired Sigi Schmid and signed Nicolas Lodeiro as a DP.

Foreign DP's with slight injuries signed in midseason have a 0% success rate until they have a full offseason and preseason under their belt. Unmitigated disaster in Seattle this year. This happens a week after Jason Kreis gets a new job.

The Garth Lagerway era has been a horsefeathers show.

Got cheap tickets to the FIre through work for the 14th, and apparently we get to go down on the field to watch pre-game warmups. First pro soccer game of any kinda that I've attended.

MLS All-Star game was so-so tonight.

Stadium was really nice. Only quibble was they have the players enter through the walkway under the stands and block the fans from crossing. Cool idea except they won't even let anyone walk up into the stands unless they have a ticket to that specific section (i.e. no going up and walking through sections). So we were stuck underneath for 15 minutes. Good idea, poor execution.

Game was slower early but picked up in the second half when most of the Arsenal reserves came in. Could definitely tell they were out there to make an impression. A lot more attacking and more urgency when going forward. I was disappointed to not see the Arsenal players who were in the Euros and Copa. I know it's shortly after that but most of the dudes from the German team showed up to Portland a couple years ago and at least played a bit.

Also disappointed in the lack of chants. I know it's an All-Star Game but the Timbers Army did a bunch of chants throughout the game a couple years ago. Not sure what the normal San Jose atmosphere is for games but it wasn't nearly as good as I was expecting.

And got to see Wondo send a good chance over the bar about 5 minutes after my dad and I were discussing his blown chance against Belgium.

Was that at Avaya? Was it hot? The season starts in two weeks so it's a little surprising they didn't bring the full roster but probably they were just saving them the airline trip. Alexis saw enough of San Jose this summer already!

It was at Avaya. It was around 90 degrees when the game started but we purposely bought seats on the West side of the stadium so we were in the shade the whole time and quite comfortable.

Turns out Lodeiro is pretty much Benny Feilhaber with Michael Bradley's work rate. Very, very good. That was a very impressive debut and if Jordan Morris finished his sitters and made an obvious pass, should've been 4-0 Seattle.

Yeah, Lodeiro was a lot of fun. 2016 is lost, but some more time to build rapport with Clint and an offseason to flush out Valdez/Ivanschitz/Gomez/Mears and bring in a new DP should have them in real good shape for next year.

Some assorted MLS Hot Takes:

-Jordan Morris is a terrible finisher. He's getting into good positions and then biffing easy chances. He should have squared for Clint on a tap in and instead blows an open goal, and then instead of a simple left footed game winner he blasts a cross 1000ft high with his right.

-I can completely understand why Dempsey is at his wits end in Seattle. He's surrounded by guys who make terrible decisions in the final third. Lodeiro might help in that regard but yesterday looked like nearly every other SSFC game; creating a ton of final third possession, but too much cycling the ball to Jones or Mears, too many poor crosses, too many poor decisions, too much poor finishing.

-How the hell is the Eastern Conference being led by 4 points by a team with a 0GD?

-Dallas is going to have some problems with the Castillo sale not going through, since Fabian decided to actually leave for Turkey last week despite the deal obviously about to fall through.

He's so American. So, so American. Smart, athletic, strong but can barely stand on his left foot, let alone do anything with a ball. Enough strengths to clearly be a good player that could someday be really good. Key weaknesses that could only be taught when he was a kid and that ship sailed.

Hahaha I didn't know that. That's hilarious.

So the coach of Rayo OKC, a franchise of recently relegated Rayo Vallecano, resigned after a hot start to the NASL Fall Season. The club has started telling Rayo OKC staff that layoffs are coming as well.

They had a lot to go up against, such as a highly popular USL club already being in town and Rayo Vallecano's relegation. This still doesn't make soccer in the US look good, but this particular operation was doomed from the start.

Additionally, the ownership group based in OKC has left the club and all of the front office staff have been separated from their positions. This looks like a club that is going out of business after one season. At this point, their match Sunday away to NY Cosmos is in doubt.

Just realized that I'm going to be in Scotland the weekend of Celtic-Rangers at Celtic Park. Despite the potential for fan violence, I'm seriously thinking about trying to get tickets because of how great of an atmosphere it would be.

This is the story of the bush league soccer gold rush. It happens pretty much everywhere that doesn't have MLS's heavy-handed CBA and Soccer United Marketing as infrastructure.

It's more the story of the modern day NASL. That league is getting usurped by the USL, which has a cheap entry fee and much lower player costs.

NASL also currently spans from Edmonton, Canada to Puerto Rico, and all NASL teams play each other. USL is divided into Western and Eastern conferences like MLS, which cuts down on travel costs. The longest trip in the USL right now is from Vancouver to south Texas, and the league schedule has many teams playing in Seattle or Portland during that trip to Vancouver as well.

All this said, Rayo OKC had many unique problems too. While Rayo OKC were starting their season, Rayo Vallecano staff were on strike because of a late payday. The local ownership had a vendetta against the ownership of OKC Energy FC, which started play in USL 2 years earlier, and made the playoffs (even won a playoff home game) in their 2nd year. The state being in a recession didn't help either. They managed to get 6 players with World Cup caps, including former Celtic and Greece star Giorgios Samaras, and they told everyone who watched anything on ESPN about their "world-class" soccer team. Rayo OKC was also poorly marketed within the city and had very little sponsorship or philanthropic footprint here.

If you can grab tickets, you should certainly go.
