I think this is the year we finally see at least one player take one, Estrada, Kennedy and Lackey all seem like real possibilities

I can't imagine Lackey couldn't get more than that on a 1 year deal, or close to AAV on a 2.

Posted
I don't think it's all that likely that Lackey accepts the QO, but part of me wonders if he'll wish he had. He doesn't have high end upside and he's 37, so the teams that want to give him 2/25 and give up a pick probably don't have him as #1 or even #3 on their list of SP candidates. Could be a situation that plays out similarly to Ervin Santana.

It's not a reason not to sign someone, but it matters. It's a lot harder to keep the player development pipeline full if you're regularly forfeiting a first round pick and the bonus pool that goes with it.

I don't really care at all. For a guy like Price, Greinke, Heyward, etc type FA it shouldn't even be in question. A guy like Estrada, Lackey, Kennedy, etc I think it absolutely should have some weight in the decision of signing a guy on that level.

I'd be OK with Lackey on a 2 year deal and giving up the 1st, if he wasn't a complete [expletive]. Not that we'd do it, but if we gave Kennedy, Estrada, Gallardo, Anderson(health) a deal and didn't also sign a big name with them-I'd be pissed. Those guys aren't worth it.

At any rate, I'd RATHER sign Kazmir than Shark(I think) due to the pick attached to Shark, as an example. But I wouldn't care much. Especially since we can recoup the value in IFA's this year anyway.

Yeah, like you say, it shouldn't even be a consideration when pursuing top-tier guys, especially since we wouldn't be picking anywhere near the top this year. But for lower tier guys, it should creep into the picture as a factor. It would barely even cross my mind that we gave up our first rounder in the even a Price/Heyward were signed, but for a guy like Lackey or Span, it would seem like a little bit of a sacrifice. That's not to say I wouldn't still do it, but it should become at least a point of consideration as the quality of the signee decreases.

Saying "I don't give a [expletive] about losing picks for signing guys" as a blanket statement seems kind of dumb.

i'm saying i do not care at all that we will miss out on the rob zastryznys (or the draft money) of the world as a result of signing any decent big league player

What if we call them the Gerrit Coles or Colby Rasmuses of the world, or the Adam Wainwrights or Carlos Quentins.

Exactly. The Rob Zastryznys aren't always Rob Zastryznys. Now the miss rate is pretty high and we absolutely shouldn't let fear of losing picks keep us from pursuing good-great players, but these picks aren't throwaways, either. They have value. There's a lot of grey area between giving up a first rounder for a good-great player and a "decent" player.

do we have any idea where Schwarber would have slipped to if we hadn't taken him? it was widely seen as an overdraft at the time

Can't remember where I read it, but pretty sure COL would have popped him at 8th overall if he got by us

There was some speculation Colorado may have taken him at 8. After that, I think it was dependent on which team outside the top 10 was fine with just taking a bat that may not have had a true position. I think the absolute bottom for him was falling to 19 and Cincy. But most mocks had him in the 11-15 range, if I recall.

Sure, if you do it regularly but that isn't the discussion right now.
