Has he been spotted singing "Go Cubs Go" in a bar in Vegas tho?

No. That was me a few weeks ago when the Cubs were still playing the Cardinals in the playoffs. Sorry for any confusion.

I want Price. We have the money. We need more pitching. We could trade for it -- which I would be fine with doing. But, I'd also rather not part with any of our young bats. I'm confident we'll get one or two of the young bats to step up next year: Baez, Russell, or Soler. Plus, we'll have a full year of Schwarber. And Heyward would be great; don't get me wrong. But I just see a glaring hole waiting to be filled by David Price. We've been seeing it for two years now. And I really only want him. Get him and the off-season is a success. Granted, we need a few more moves than that, but I'm sure he won't preclude us from rounding out the roster. And, sure, the off-season could also be a success if we don't add him... or even more of a success, depending on the other moves. But, I really just want David Price. Do that and the rest is gravy for me.

“There’s probably not another city that’s dying for a World Series more than Chicago. I think everybody would probably agree with me on that. That’s special. It’s absolutely special.” – David Price, sounding like the Cy Young Award winner already had a free-agent destination in mind, June 10.

Wasn't that basically in response to "David, do you think it would be special for the Cubs to win the World Series?"

I'm just asking, more for my own education, and not saying the questions below are based on fact.

Is there any thought out there that David Price is mentally weak? That under a huge spotlight, etc., he more times than not melts down?

Why did the Blue Jays, in a must-win playoff game, go with Estrada over Price?

yeah that 5-time all-star and former cy young is mentally weak, but i guess one time he got a save in game 7 of the 2008 ALCS

Jon Lester has some serious creds, and some people think he's mentally weak.

Again, just asking, realized I would get mocked. But what's your take on why they pitched Price out of the bullpen in Game 4 of the ALDS -- in a situation where they didn't even need to -- instead of starting Game 5?

They mismanaged Price's workload during the second half of the season and his stuff wasn't as good as it normally is.

Also, the manager is not a member of MENSA.

Jed Hoyer told me he had no [expletive] idea what Gibbons was doing.

Was he mentally weak when he pitched a 2 ER complete game in a a 1 game playoff against the Rangers in 2013? Or do we ignore that since it was technically the regular season?

How about when he pitched 7 1/3 scoreless innings the last game of the 2014 season to clinch the division for the Tigers?

It's not like he hasn't performed well in high pressure situations before, making me think that this is an issue of sample size.

Eh probably. No idea, but that sounds likely.

And it appears as though they're ready to spend on another top-of-the-rotation starter with free agents Zack Greinke and David Price high on their wish list.

Greinke, who opted out of a Dodgers' contract that had $71 million guaranteed remaining, received their $15.8 million qualifying offer Friday. To sign him, the Cubs would have to forfeit a compensatory draft pick.

The Blue Jays acquired Price from the Tigers during the season, so he's ineligible to receive a qualifying offer. Price pitched for the Rays under manager Joe Maddon and the Cubs reportedly are one of his preferred destinations.

General manager Jed Hoyer wouldn't talk in specifics about free agent targets Friday as he's preparing for next week's general managers meetings, though he conceded the Cubs are looking to add a prime-time starter and starting pitching depth in what they consider a "deeper" market than in recent years.

"Obviously the qualifying offer is a consideration," Hoyer said. "But 2016 and beyond are very important years to us. We're clearly a team that's poised to win. That's the most important factor we're going to consider in free agency — how does this player affect our ability to win in the near future.

"(Losing a compensatory) draft pick is important. We've built this team through the draft in large part, and through trades. But when you're in a winning window, you look at that consideration differently than you might have when you're building."

One familiar free agent the Cubs plan to explore is White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija, who was extended a qualifying offer. Samardzija went 11-13 with a 4.96 ERA, 163 strikeouts and 29 homers allowed in 214 innings in 2015. He had moments of excellence but largely faltered after the Sox decided not to move him at the trade deadline, including going 0-6 with an 8.82 ERA in August.

If we could get Shark in addition to Price (or Greinke, for that matter), OMG.

Arrieta, Price, Lester, Samardzija, Hendricks :neo:

Were Shark's struggles this year flukish? His numbers were horrendous.

I'm basically at moving on, he's healthy and [expletive] happens. The big thing is that he lost his splitter, previously his best pitch.

I think Fangraphs did an article on him recently, he actually threw his splitter for more strikes this year than any year in his career so idk if he lost it or what to take away from that. Looking at pitch types he went to throwing his cutter a lot more than any other year at expense of his fastball but his velocities on all his pitches are right in line with his career norms, which I think you could make the conclusion that his "stuff" didn't really take a step back. I'd be all for bringing him back as our 2nd pitcher addition this offseason and see if last year was an outlier along with hoping getting a bump from a Bosio reunion.

edit: here's the article http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/what-has-happened-to-jeff-samardzija/

Nah, it was the opposite, which is why it was such a big deal at the time.

The question was if Price would like to be traded to a team that's winning now or one that he could stay with for years of winning (this was in '14 when we were sucking). He then said he had 2 teams in mind that he declined to name and then went on to bring up the Cubs himself.

“Winning absolutely is something you want to do," Price said. "Being a part of something special is also something you want to do. You can take that to a first-place team. You could take that all the way to a last-place team like the Cubs. With the talent they have coming up they could be a very special team in a few years as well.

"That would probably be the coolest city to win a championship in. They haven't done it in I'm not sure how long. To do that there that would be the coolest city to win a championship in right now."

Edit: maybe davell's quote was a different one from this year, but this was the original one that started it off and was pretty much the same.

wholly unsurprising, but still makes me excited

The Cubs will start meeting with agents of all the top free agent pitchers over the next 36 hours.

I am just not that interested in Price. I'd much prefer go the Zimmermann+Span+O'day route over the Price+Austin Jackson route

So you aren't interested in price because of the cost then?
