I get what you guys are saying and I would love it to happen as much as anyone. Just seemed like a somewhat arbitrary (or incorrect) place to draw the realistic/not realistic line. Plus I'm not generally a fan of getting more upset at a loss because of the wins before it (in the regular season), which is essentially what happened here.

It's just bad luck being in this division. We'll be the ones running away with it next year, and for years after that.

Us passing the realistic/unrealistic line only occurred because we won the two previous games. So it is absolutely rational being more upset now. Had we lost one of the two prior games, our chances were back to being not very realistic at all.

but the wins before it directly increased the significance

Exactly. Here is why it's frustrating:

Looking at things six days ago: "We need the Cards to crumble and for us to go on a run." *That starts happening in the series before we play them* "Ok, now we need to sweep them this series and there is a chance, seeing as how we have another chance to sweep them at home." *That starts happening and is almost fulfilled* Then, boom, the eighth innings hits. And that basically flies out the window. It was pretty unrealistic because we needed a lot to happen, but it was happening.

I ain't even mad. We aside from 2 innings, we owned the set. Time to move on and defile the carcass of the Philadelphia Phillies

I know what you mean. At the beginning of this week, I was hoping for the Cubs to get just one of the games at Busch. But still a disappointment. Now let's hope the guys feast on the bottom feeders, as opposed to allowing them to spoil it.

Yeah of course each passing win made it more likely. I guess I was taking more of a 'don't get your hopes up until it actually happens' type attitude. Playing out what you guys are saying....winning today, taking the first two against them, and then losing the last game of the series would have been the 'worst' outcome? Or most frustrating at least?

The two wins were great, and satisfying in a lot of ways. But they didn't move the needle that much.

It's just more frustrating. Those first two wins were in the bank. And it wasn't so unrealistic anymore, especially with a two-run lead in the 8th.

This one's on Maddon (a rare thing this season). Instead of pinch-hitting Montero for Ross in the top of the 8th, he stuck with Ross for some reason against Broxton. And then he pulled Bryant back and had Herrera hit for Lester. When you have a chance to step on their throats, you do it.

And then no Grimm and using Rodney in a high leverage spot is even worse. Oh well, division wasn't realistic anyways.

I don't have much of a problem with not putting out Montero there. Day game after a night game and all that, especially if he already pulled Schwarber.

The Bryant thing is weird. Given that we haven't heard anything about an injury, I assume it was just a day off. Just seems like a weird day to do it.

Bryant hit in the 9th, no?

Just landed and saw the score. That sucks. Imagine where we'd be if we closed out this game and the Peralta HR game...

Why does it seem like Strop is either completely dominant or completely shits the bed with no in between and with no warning. Like he could strike out the side one game and then give up 4 the next and strike out the side after that.

Strop is still my guy but I'm definitely going to be nervous every time he comes in during the playoffs

And the game where we got 5 off Martinez in the first inning.

were any of our wins against st louis of the flukish variety like a few of our losses were? can't remember

Not sure how fluky this is but during that DH in July, we were tied 2-2 in the 7th and we hit a DP grounder to the pitcher who threw the ball away allowing us to take the lead (and tack on an insurance run in the inning)

Was just looking this up because this is what's most frustrating.

In the second game of the DH, we were down 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh, got 3 in the seventh and one in the eighth to win. But the rest of our wins over them were routine where we never trailed.

May 4: Up 5-0 and then 8-4, blow it with 2 in the 6th and 4 in the 7th.

June 26: Greg Garcia game. Cubs up 2-1, Garcia HR in the 8th, lost on a walkoff in the 10th.

July 8: Jhonny Peralta game.

And now today.

So they've gotten us late 4 times and we've only gotten them late once.

Has Maddon said why he didn't use Bryant or Montero today? There is no rational excuse for using Ross in the 8th inning even if the Cards have a lefty on the mound; probably his worst managed game of the season today

stop this silliness

let's just get that stupid home game so i can at least go to one game, because the pirates are way better at home, and because [expletive] that giant PNC outfield (esp with our OFers vs theirs).

Us beating Pittsburgh would be good and a home game against them is better than a road game, but if there's any chance Pittsburgh can catch STL, that's what I want because STL doesn't have a Cole and I think we would beat them in a one game scenario with Arrieta.

Obviously that would put us behind the 8 ball with Pittsburgh in the NLDS, but that's happening whichever way we go, and if it happens with Pittsburgh at least it means we're not playing [expletive] St. Louis.

Sorry that means I'm rooting against you getting to go to a home game but yeah that doesn't matter to me one bit.

Wondering this myself. Definitely thought he'd PH Bryant in the 9th. Weird.

I wonder if Lester will be up on manslaughter charges this morning.

Can we get today's game thread going?

Wanted to post this there but I'll probably forget once it's posted but...if Jake goes exactly 3 scoreless innings to start the game today, his ERA will officially drop to 1.9948, thus rounded to 1.99.

Can also get there if he goes at least 7.2 IP and gives up 1 ER

How perfect is it that it's raining on the east coast on the day rondon fan has to start the Cubs @ Phillies game thread.

He probably assumes they won't bother playing.
