Using Richard and Rodney to play matchups is not a bad move. Leaving Strop in(who was more unlucky than bad) would've been fine too, but Richard for Carpenter and Rodney for the rest is perfectly fine.

Not pinch hitting Bryant I don't really get unless there's some injury risk or he just promised Bryant he wouldn't use him today or something.

bryant must've had the "flu" again

Strop needs to stop [expletive] the bed against these guys. It is ridiculous how in his head they are.

he walked a guy and gave up a [expletive] seeing eye single

Eh; before today he had a 12.60 ERA and a 2.600 WHIP and opponents hitting .364 .517 .682 1.199 in 8 appearances against them this year. Just one of those things.

You can mainly chalk this up to shitty luck, though. 8 appearances isn't really that indicative.

yeah one of those small sample size things for a relief pitcher who gave up at least one 2 run HR that i'm aware of in those innings

I guess you still have to trust Strop there despite how bad he's been against St. Louis this season. He's still your best 8th inning guy.

As good of a manager as Maddon is, past attachment to Rodney, coupled with a sharp outing yesterday resulted in way too much faith in him when Rondon should've probably been brought in for a 5 out save/use Grimm.

Wood better be starting that DH game, or else he's hurt. There's really no reason to be using Richard over him.

Hopefully Bryant's alright.

Well then. Now its time to talk about the series as a whole. 2/3 in St Louis is good work. Deflating last couple of innings, but nice series overall. [expletive] [expletive] spaghetti piscotty whoever and [expletive] his dumb team. Let's go gain some ground in Pennsylvania.

meh

3/3 in st louis would've meant something. winning the first two was cool and all but we needed a sweep if this series was to mean much of anything.

2/3 is as about good as 1 or 0 at this point.

yeah, there's pittsburgh but MEH

I really really really hate the Cardinals

I told my b/f this weekend that my idea of Hell would be waking up with my bedroom all decked out in Cardinals paraphernalia and having people insist that I was a Cardinals fan no matter how much I protested to the contrary.

He said that I should just give in to the inevitable and become a Cardinals fan. I tickled him because I couldn't in good conscience smack him. :-)

I was all ready to be five games out in the loss column; the Cardinals collapsing in epic fashion; and us kicking their ass in Chicago and winning the division after leading it for only, like, 3 days.

This sucks. Horrible loss. Get out of here with that, "It didn't matter much" [expletive]. Now I have to go back to not really caring what happens for three weeks.

I'm bugged by the first half of the 8th, too. If you're pulling Lester, why is Ross hitting? Why is Herrera then hitting for Lester? If Bryant actually wasn't available, alright, but Montero-Bryant-Russell would have been much more soothing.

Pretty much. This DID mean something, and this is a crappy loss. It's not going to send them spiraling off into failure, but being only 5.5 back with the series coming up would have been gigantic. Maddon should have been doing everything possible to step on their throat today.

If you're going to take Lester and Strop out, why not Rondon? Piece together the 9th if you get there. That would've seemingly been a Joe-like move. Meh.

This sucks.

Yep. Everything about those last two innings sucked.

I was really hoping after the first two games that the Cardinals pixie dust magic had dissipated.

It has. That was a very mundane comeback win.

I realize it was after Lester had come out of the game, but they won by stringing three of their five hits together in a way that scored the game's winning runs. Hits that easily could have been scattered harmlessly through the rest of the game. Not to mention their mediocre relievers shutting down the Cubs and Cardinals pitching lights out when the Cubs had scoring opportunities.

This was a very Cardinals-esque comeback win.

All hits can be "scattered harmlessly throughout a game;" that's an utterly meaningless thing to say. Are you saying anything less than thunderous doubles or home runs are just fluke-y hits when it comes to winning late? You're reaching even harder than usual.

exactly how i feel

after the peralta game, the 5-0 game in may at busch, and the first game in june in busch that arrieta pitched, this is definitely in my top 5 most annoying losses of the year... probably just ahead of the goldschmidt/ahmed game

It was a very [insert literally any team here]-esque comeback win. That's basically how every comeback win happens. Get out of here with your "only the Cardinals" crap.

Are you guys really worried about the pen?

Yes. I don't trust anyone outside of Rondon.

well that's silly

"Dammit, they hit their walkoff home run in the bottom of the 9th instead of harmlessly in the 4th! ONLY THAT TEAM!!!"

I am still pissed about that Wil Myers homer game, where he should have been rung up the pitch before, too.
