what's a better situation...1-2 1 out and runner on 1st, or 2 outs and runner on 2nd?

I think %'s say the latter (as I often hear that sacrifice bunting a guy from 1st to 2nd isn't worth the out)

I don't understand. I came here looking for answers and it seems I'm not the only one. 65 pitches. Doing fine. Weird.

With a lefty due up and a RISP, I get it. Just really surprised Maddon did it with Hammel at only 65 pitches. Edited by Gilby

I think Maddon is thinking about future games, rather than this one... not sure it makes sense, but apparently he thinks they have this one in the bag...

I think the logic is that a SP injury could hurt this team more than maybe any other individual loss. Hammel not only hasn't had a bunch of deep seasons(like Arrieta and Hendricks), but also has past injury trouble(unlike anyone else in the rotation save Haren). Being cautious with him within reason(pulling him early for advantageous reliever matchups in spots where that matters) is not a bad idea.

I can understand Maddon not wanting to walk Lind and put the go-ahead run on base. Plus, all of our best relievers for 7-8-9 innings should be available.

right but the former has a 1-2 count which makes it different than what those run expectancy numbers are based on (which assume a 0-0 count)

There's no way he thinks up 1 in the 6th constitutes 'in the bag'. It was probably a combination of keeping Hammel healthy and the opportunity to play matchups in a 1 run game.
