http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2015/8/8/9121753/cubs-continue-to-drain-the-giants-of-life-hope-and-playoff-odds

This series has been an efficient encapsulation of life itself: you will come into your own and build a life for yourself and over time you will watch all that you've built degrade, be destroyed, or upended by the next generation. The Cubs are the Giants' reminder of their mortality.

These Cubs are young and dynamic on offense and full of different looks when it comes to their pitching. They have been built to be exactly this way. So, too, have the Giants been built to be exactly as they are: part Erector set, part Lego pieces, part bubblegum, and the rest a whole lot of hope. The bubblegum and dreams have worked out well over the past six years but now it is curtains on their grand performance of good fortune.

I think we can all agree that it's extraordinarily frustrating to watch your favorite baseball team go up against a squad you know to be far superior and get beaten down accordingly. The frustration comes from hope that's fueled by years and years of watching baseball and knowing how quickly the worm turns. That even the worst team can win at least one game out of four. The Giants surely have a win in them, but it won't come while they're in Chicago.

Some arbitrary endpoint fun...

Dating back to Sunday, July 26th, the Cubs have scored the following run totals:

5, 9, 2, 3, 5, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 7, 8

That's a total of 66 runs in 13 games, for an average of 5.08/G.

This average would be good for 2nd in the league, just to give a frame of reference (damn Blue Jays).

Cubs would be in 1st place in 4 of the other 5 divisions (ALE ALW NLE NLW) would be 2.5 games up on the 1st wild card spot if they were in the AL Central

To say nothing of how much better our record might be if we were playing against the chump teams in those divisions 19 times instead of St. Louis and Pittsburgh

I'd say just St Louis since we're 7-5 against Pittsburgh.

They wouldn't be first in the NLW

David's reply in the now locked 7/28 thread reminded me of the column one of he Chicago writers wrote early last year about how the White Sox rebuild was going much better than the Cubs. Anyone remember the column and/or who wrote it?

My bad. They'd be 1/2 game out of first in the NL West

It seemed like there were multiple ones. Garcia was going to be a stud, Eaton's grittiness would set the table for Abreu, who was much better than Rizzo, and their 1-2-3 of Sale/Quintana/Shark was possibly the best in MLB....

I don't remember who wrote them, but my guess is Hayes. Maybe Sullivan.

Cubs on pace for 91 wins. Keep in mind that only 1 Cub team in the last 26 years and only 4 in the last 70 have won 90 games in a 162 or less game season (excluding the 98 Cubs because it took them 163 games to get to 90 wins)

other teams misery porn isn't really as satisfying when they are defending champions.

Trying to find that one from last year, but in the meantime, here's a good one from early this year

That tempers absolutely nothing for me.
