David's reply in the now locked 7/28 thread reminded me of the column one of he Chicago writers wrote early last year about how the White Sox rebuild was going much better than the Cubs. Anyone remember the column and/or who wrote it?

Does anyone remember Joe Buck basically going into a catatonic meatball stupor on some nationally televised game last year right after the Samardzija deal? He railed against our front office about the trade and basically said the Cubs were in a constant cycle of suckiness, in which we would never get better. He kept going on about how you can't build around young players and other nonsense.

At this point, I'm curious which is more likely, that the Cubs win the 1st wildcard, or that the White Sox finish with the worst record in the AL.

I'd lean towards the Cubs only because they'd only have to pass one team. Sox would have to pass four.

so, i was reading this daily herald article on yesterday's game and saw this, uh, interesting comment at the end...

Starting to believe what? Winning games is not enough at this point in the season. As of Saturday evening, they were still 9.5 GB St. Louis because both St. Louis and Pittsburgh won. The jinx factor is firmly in place. As long as the teams the Cubs need to beat continue to win the Cubs will gain no ground. If they lose any games and PITT and STL win theirs, the Cubs will fall even further behind.

If the Cubs didn't have that 5 game losing streak in June and the 5-5 stretch the end of July, they might be in second place or even tied for first! All they can hope for is STL and PITT going into slump and not play as good as they are. Another Cubs 4 or 5 game losing streak will be the nail in the coffin.

If the Cubs somehow manage to limp through a wild card playoff, you can depend on them choking in the division finals as they have many times before. They at least ought to get a trophy for not finishing dead last as they had the previous 3 seasons.

Saw this on a Giants blog...thought you guys would enjoy.

This series has been an efficient encapsulation of life itself: you will come into your own and build a life for yourself and over time you will watch all that you've built degrade, be destroyed, or upended by the next generation. The Cubs are the Giants' reminder of their mortality.

These Cubs are young and dynamic on offense and full of different looks when it comes to their pitching. They have been built to be exactly this way. So, too, have the Giants been built to be exactly as they are: part Erector set, part Lego pieces, part bubblegum, and the rest a whole lot of hope. The bubblegum and dreams have worked out well over the past six years but now it is curtains on their grand performance of good fortune.

I think we can all agree that it's extraordinarily frustrating to watch your favorite baseball team go up against a squad you know to be far superior and get beaten down accordingly. The frustration comes from hope that's fueled by years and years of watching baseball and knowing how quickly the worm turns. That even the worst team can win at least one game out of four. The Giants surely have a win in them, but it won't come while they're in Chicago.

i felt like the giants' bubble gum and dreams thing was over in 2013, and then they won the world series the next season.

wow this guy sure is good at stating the obvious. if pittsburgh and st louis keep winning then the cubs won't gain ground? if the cubs lose and those teams win, the cubs will lose ground? if the cubs had won some games that they lost then they would be higher in the standings? thsi guy is a [expletive] genius.

Remember when the Padres wouldn't trade with the Cubs because AJ Preller thought they were still in the playoff race? Well now the Padres are further from a playoff spot than any AL team.

Interesting. Hasnt Ross been catching Arrieta recently? Maybe it's because they trust Montero calling the game more than Schwarber

also ross caught arrieta because montero was hurt unless i missed something prior to the injury. they didn't want schwarber catching arrieta.
