this is true

 

Around the NYC area people say "going into the city" but I always heard suburban chicagoans say "going downtown" no matter where they were going inside the city limits.

maybe it's further out burbs. i grew up in the very near north burbs (skokie) and if we said downtown, we meant downtown. but we're under 5 minutes from the city limits.

chicago suburbanites say going into the city

 

i first noticed it with my ex gf's family who lived in hanover park...but they also were originally from another part of the country so maybe that's why they said it. also rockford. anywhere in the city meant they were going downtown.
