Imagine the end of 1984 where the protagonist admits that he submits fully to the will of the despotic regime and that he loves Big Brother finally

I love Big Schwarber

Schwarber is an alien sent to earth to win baseball. Not win a baseball game. Win the entire sport of baseball and bring it back to his alien overlords.

TIL Coomer thinks Wrigley is downtown.

bumpkins refer to any part of a big city as downtown, i've learned over the years

this is true

Around the NYC area people say "going into the city" but I always heard suburban chicagoans say "going downtown" no matter where they were going inside the city limits.

Well, to be fair, most of the cool [expletive] in Chicago isn't downtown.

yup. i almost never go there and i have no idea what the allure is.

friend of mine couldn't believe i didn't want to move to lakeshore east, where, not only does it suck and there is nothing to do without walking for miles or driving/cabbing dealing with the horrific traffic, but i probably would've gotten a 10'x10' studio for what my rent is.

There are a lot of benefits, too. Close to grocery store, close to lake, close to lots of office buildings (shorter commute), lots of new construction, good views, close to parks...

sure. if you work near there. otherwise there is zero chance i'd consider living there.

and parking for guests is horrendous. lower wacker used to be an option but later on when the meters got sold they implemented a 2 or 3 hour limit (or maybe 4, can't remember, but there was a limit) 24/7. which means when i'd crash on his couch i had to pay like $20 to park in the garage.

you're basically "close" to the things inside the development, and that's it. most of it sucks. you can be close to a grocery store (and lots of other [expletive] not at lakeshore east) and the lake in a lot of other places.

As a suburbanite who would occasionally go downtown to show visiting friends the sights, and also occasionally go to the Lincoln Park area to visit a friend, I far preferred paying for garage parking to aimlessly wandering looking for empty spaces and wondering if I was allowed to park at the ones I found.

I agree... but it's [expletive] downtown. Just take public transportation!

i mean, yeah, which is why i wouldn't live there (the fact that it's [expletive] downtown - where nothing is cool but everything is congested and overpriced).

I lived in LS East for 2 months and it wasn't my favorite, but I did live in Printer's Row (which is technically "downtown") and it was awesome. Being able to walk to work 5 days per week and "commute" to the cool stuff on weekends was pure bliss. Life-changing.
