Francoeur can't hit the ball unless you put it pretty much in that exact spot, so a bold move to do so

Precisely. Should have thrown him nothing but breaking balls.

The home run was on a slider.

Soriano is done. Much rather see Edwards

see him walk 7 batters per 9 innings pitched? no thanks.

He wouldn't be put in tight games. Better yet, he wouldn't be throwing 87 with no life.

walking nearly a batter an inning is still a problem regardless of the score of the baseball game that you're pitching in.

Castro, Ross, Herrera.. That's our plan of attack against their closer. A combined slugging percentage of -.300

Soriano has one of those breaking balls that doesn't break

Yeah it IS really weird they didn't double switch Schwarber in and keep his bat instead of David Ross. Likely makes no difference, but it's strange

With the lead, you have to keep your defensive guys in.

If the Cubs sit still at the deadline, they will fade these next two months. Their bullpen is garbage.

i know clutch hitting isn't really a thing, but at some point the cubs are going to have to do better in that area. .225 with RISP and below .200 with RISP and 2 outs is a killer. they lost today because the phillies had 4 hits with RISP and the cubs continued to fail when they had opportunities to pad the lead.

They scored 3 runs off Jerome Williams and you're blaming the bullpen?

yes their top-10-in-baseball bullpen is garbage.

i'm starting to get close to the point where more than half of the posts in game threads are on my ignore list.

They were winning 3-2 in the 9th inning.. You're right, it's the offense's fault they blew the lead.

I have to think that's related to our utter inability to make contact. I love dongs as much as anyone, but time and time again it feels like it's an uphill battle just to put the damn ball in play when we need to

Like to see Bosio work with him. I'll take upside, intriguing arm that may struggle over an aging vet who should've retired in the off season any day

TruffleShuffle - you are exactly what makes me laugh in this forum. Look beyond ERA. Look at numbers in high pressure/leverage situations, the Cubs bullpen is among the worst in the MLB.

I'm glad in this case since it saved me some time, but when I'm in the bottom of the ninth and MLB.TV pops up a highlight that says "Papelbon slams the door", it kind of ruins the rest of the game.

[expletive] off, MLB.TV

Of 136 qualified relievers, the Cubs have 3 of the top 50 in Win Probability Added. That doesn't even include Grimm, who has been terrific this year and due to injury and Maddon's preference hasn't been given many high leverage innings.

I don't know how the [expletive] they can never hit sac fly or anything with the guy on 3rd and 1 out...Every [expletive] time...Could have won the game with that extra run. Same thing has happened multiple times in that scenario where they can tack on a run or tie it and they fail to execute in that scenario and they [expletive] pop it up,K, or sharp grounder right at the infielder.
