Every player has slumps we know that, and Schwarber will have one too, but what do the Cubs do when Montero is ready to come back?

I hope they start having Schwarber out in LF during BP and working with the coaches, cuz his bat will be needed for sure.

He can play 1B, Rizzo is done.

When he comes back this season he becomes the backup catcher and then gets traded in the off season or stays on the team as the backup catcher.

But you have a backup catcher that bats LH? The way that Joe runs this team is that he always likes his LH / RH splits i dont see them totally abolishing a RH backup. So you potentially go into the playoffs with 3 C's on the roster? Cant Schwarb play some LF?

The chances of Schwarber being completely wasted as our backup catcher are zero.

He's either gonna start at catcher, start in left field, or get traded for a pitcher.

It's looking like early September for Montero anyway. If that's the case, we'll have a much better idea than we do now on Schwarber's progress. At that point, you give him some time in LF and some games behind the plate too.

Next year, my honest guess is we'll see Schwarber catch 50-60 games and play a bunch in LF. With the following season being the year he takes over full time behind the plate, if he's proved himself capable.(I think he will personally)

I read that to mean Montero becomes the backup catcher. Plus it answers the question of the thread accurately when read that way.

Same here.

Davell is on the right track, I think. Montero isn't getting re-evaluated til August, right? At which point if everything is perfect he can start rehabbing and maybe makes it back by the 3rd week of August. Given how stretched out nearly every single Cubs injury recovery has been with this regime, that might even be optimistic.

At that point you have the same problem you were facing without the injury, Iowa's season ends at the end of August and Schwarber is on the MLB roster. Except now you can better play matchups, keep guys healthy, and keep the hot hand since you have a better idea of how Schwarber will fare.

I wasn't necessarily making any statements about Montero. I think if we are in the playoffs this year, Montero will have to do the catching. Next year, maybe they try to split Schwarber between catcher and left as a transition like davell said, I dunno.

Basically, I was speaking long term. Long term, Schwarber is either going to be our starting C, starting LF, or a trade piece for a pitcher.

I really think you should probably eliminate him getting traded for pitching out of that scenario. That bat plays somewhere for us under any condition.

Either that or amend it to a pitcher, another pitcher and a position player or two

I don't want to say anyone is untouchable but I highly doubt they trade Schwarber unless its a deal that absolutely cannot be turned down (Chris Sale?!)

I personally trade Montero in the offseason and give Kyle the C job with Ross as the backup in '16.

do you think they'd give schwarber more time in LF than at C next season? i tend to think that they'd want him full time at catcher if that's where they see him long term, just so he can get the reps and keep improving.

His bat at Catcher is Superstar calibur at lf its still great but good hitting LF'ers come a dime a dozen compared to godly C's.

I think they keep Schwarber at C for a few seasons, maybe move him elsewhere after a few years if his legs start to have trouble.

Everytime i watch Schwarber play i start thinking more and more he can do it, he dont look that bad, and omg that bat.

Relatively speaking Montero's contract isnt THAT bad, i think the FO trades him in the Offseason.

I think a lot of that will depend on how he plays the next couple months.

So an admittedly less than 100% Montero wants to rush back and kick Schwarbs to the bench.

hmmm schwarbs will have to be in LF. Ross to the bench (even on lester starts)

Yeah but we know that's not going to happen, and Coughlan has been like our 3rd best hitter this year.

So is he saying it's something that just needs a long rest period or something that will need surgery to get to 100%?

I'm guessing it's a cross between the former, and just the general "a catcher is always banged up to some degree during the season and 100% is a moving target".

Coghlan to 2B, Castro to bench.
