THAT makes no sense.

Your saying Bryant is a better hitter than Schwarber?

Schwarber

Hit: 60 | Power: 65 | Run: 40 | Arm: 45 | Field: 40 | Overall: 65

Bryant

Hit: 55 | Power: 75 | Run: 40 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 70

What are you talking about dude? I said Schwarber is a better HITTER than Bryant not a better PLAYER.

you sure your not using a german translation app?

i don't understand why it's so important to get Montero's bat in the lineup. I mean, if they bench Castro, that's fine, but potentially benching Russell is just stupid.

they're not benching russell. montero's bat is a huge upgrade over castro. montero at C is a significant upgrade over Schwarber. russell is almost certainly a defensive upgrade at SS. i think schwarber/coghlan in LF is close to a wash. just have to see how competent coghlan can be at 2B.

I predict weeping and gnashing of teeth.

I can appreciate that Maddon's enough of an outside-the-box thinker to have given Coghlan a few innings in the infield when rest/injuries had it made sense. At the same time, Coghlan has zero place in any semi-regular lineup in the infield. I'd rather have Castro take up left handed hitting.

Purely from an offensive standpoint (don't get too hung up on the order plz)...

Fowler

Schwarber

Coghlan

Rizzo

Bryant

Montero

Soler

P

Russell

is fun to look at vs. a RHP

The whole batting Coghlan third thing seems odd. I like him getting on base ahead of the big bats, but why is he sandwiched between them right now?

i think it's just that Maddon/advanced scouting identified lefties as a problem area for some of those starters we've faced and stacked all the LH hitters atop the order to exploit that

also, THE BOOK suggests the 4th-best hitter bats 3rd, though that's pretty old research

Sure, and I'd get him batting 2nd or leading off, but putting him between Schwarber and Rizzo just seems weird, especially when he's inevitably pulled for a defensive replacement.

Well once he gets pulled, he probably is replaced by Denorfia, at which point at least the other team has the LRL problem when playing matchups

also reminder: guy who wrote the book works for the cubs (not that it means anything)

I mentioned this in some game thread, but Coghlan's ability/'need' to be pulled for defense is a feature for that situation. When it comes to late innings you can know you have the option of Denorfia v. a LH reliever if you want it, unless someone wants to go full LaRussa and use 3 relievers to get through those 3.

I was all set to rant, but Denofria isn't sucking so far in August like he did in July, so whatever.

Plus part of it is the frustration that the Cubs really only have one everyday HR threat in their lineup right now when they should have 3-4 that would make such tomfoolery redundant.
