What do options have to do with him getting called up to the majors right now?

you can send a guy down to the minors until they dont have any options left or have hit some kind of service time rule on a mlb roster and if they dont have options they have to clear waivers etc.

Like I said, you don't understand options. Szczur has used an option year this year. They can send him up and down as much as they want this season without burning another option.

That's a fun little bit of roster maneuvering.

 

Worth noting that in order to get to an outright assignment that he could refuse for free agency, he had to have cleared waivers.

 

I kinda figured. No team that's any good would want him and no team that isn't would bother.

 

 

Though maybe the Pirates could use him back, ha.
