There's an idea.....Trade for years of control. If the target is 10 per each of our main guys, why not trade Hammel to the Dodgers(who are in the market for pitching!) for 2 extra pre arb years(those are cheaper than arb years!) of Zach Lee, Julio Urias, Corey Seager, Joc Pedersen, and Carlos Frias.

This would give us 10 pre arb years to dole out to our best kids and it takes them away from the Dodgers!

Those 10 extra cheap seasons then allow us to make the Padres trade concocted yesterday that we were all in complete support over!

Doesn't take much of a leap to conclude that from you saying that they're a year away from serious playoff contention when they are actually currently in serious playoff contention and have been for an extended period of time now.

I think next season they can contend for the division which isn't happening this year due to the Cardinals having an amazing season. Sure the playoffs are open season but I fully think next year the Cubs will be a force mainly due to the experience guys will get. I think they can make the playoffs this season without David Price or even Cole Hammels and I'm not keen on giving up prospects.

That's where I stand. This season has been fun as hell and I think everything is looking up for the future. They have a great manager and guys who have talent and I love what Theo has done to rebuild.

It's not unreasonable to say they can (and probably will) make the playoffs without adding Price (rental) or Hamels (long term piece)

that said, if we trade for somebody good this week, we aren't likely to get ripped off because the same smart guys that put us in this position are the ones making the trade, so stop worrying about that. for what Price is likely to cost (for the same reason some people don't want to trade for him - it's 10-11 starts + playoffs...our team isn't run by idiots and isn't going to give up much more than that is worth), it's worth doing even with the crapshoot that is the playoffs. that and upgrading from wada/richard/etc. to david price helps you further cement that playoff berth and maybe even gives you a puncher's chance at the division.

i'd also much rather start david price than kyle hendricks in a playoff game (and rather go 4 man than 3 man if possible)

The Cubs are a year away from serious playoff contention/run. I wouldn't trade anything right now. Price isn't going to help the Cubs win the division this year.

Next season is the year I think. Sure they could get in this year but I think the young guys need a full season in the majors to really shine so there is no need to trade a bunch of prospects for a rental guy.

Unless the Cubs can fleece the Tigers which I doubt will happen.

I agree. Why continue to lead the race for the 2nd wildcard and get into the playoffs this year, when you can get into the playoff NEXT year?!?!?!?

LOL well when the cubs get the 2nd wild card and the kids experience the post season (rizzo included) for the first time they will be THAT much more prepared to own the NL for the rest of the decade.

Personally, I want the Cubs to sell this week. Trade Hammel, Fowler, Montero and anyone else who isn't under 25 and under team control for 10 years.

I'm 100% on board with this line of thinking.

That would be interesting, my gut tells me if they can get a young pitcher or 2 that can be at least hendricks level they could still get the 2nd wildcard.

that's actually a really good idea, let's go get a couple young #1/#2 starters

i think that they prolly couldnt pull it off until the offseason though, just a gut feeling here no logic involved.

I'd do 1 of Torres/Baez, McKinney and any pitching prospects they want because F pitching prospects

You'd give up 2 top 40 prospects for 11 starts? That's absolute madness.

Yes. But I should've added the qualifier that they already planned/feel reasonably certain they'd sign/extend him in the offseason. Also we r in a really good playoff spot right now, just gotta get in and anything can happen. Lester/Arrieta/Price in whatever order gives this team a WS chance

I really don't get when people try to build in a potential re-signing of a rental into the value equation. I think it matters very little and definitely not worth giving up much extra value for.

Yep. You don't get extra credit because you paid more to get that rental. The only case where it might make a small difference is if a player had a bad impression of a team/manager that you could use that time to change it, but in the case of Price it's the exact opposite.

Would one of Torres/Jimenez and then maybe a second piece like Candelario/Almora with someone like Black as the third piece be enough?

Torres or Jimenez depending on who the Tigers like is a high ceiling guy who I would hate to lose, both both are far enough away that we wouldn't immediately miss them. The others are filler players who could be useful. Obviously the deal hinges on the value of the high ceiling youngsters.

But we get to save our draft pick!

I would prefer the Cubs keep their powder dry and wait to sign him (or any other major pitcher) in the offseason.

Keep their powder dry for what?

i was more posting it because of the tigers tidbit

Keep their powder dry - I don't see why they'd trade multiple top tier prospects for a) 2 month rental b) a 31+ yo pitcher with a ton of miles on his arm.

I was thinking of Hamels

What are you calling top tier prospects, why do you think it would cost that, and why do you think our front office would make a trade that is so obviously bad in your eyes?
