What kind of baseball player can only be productive one out of every 3 times?

Castro sucks. No point defending him anymore.

Starlin Castro and Robinson Cano were above average middle infielders last year too. Should we talk more about last year?

Nobody's been defending him for a while.

I said that earlier.

But bukie apparently was there, so I needed to update him.

I don't like weirdly nihilistic baseball fan David.

Please go back to drinking.

this is what happens when nights like this happen

I don't know, you were pretty Kyleicious throughout the game.

It's OK.

went from having hammel on the mound going for a glorious sweep to thinking hammel was out for the year to watching clayton richard immediately give up 4 runs

and repeatedly seeing castro come up in key spots

Why harp on the one thing he's doing well, though?

Point being: the Cubs pitchers have great stats when it doesn't really matter.

Fangraphs has an interesting stat called clutch which details how much better/worse pitchers are in high leverage situations. Cubs are 16th in the majors, ie average. Woohoo!

More fun...clutch has zero year-to-year correlation. Literally zero. In other words, the Cubs haven't been "unclutch", and more generally being "unclutch" in the past has no relationship with if you're "unclutch" in the future. Or, more simply, you're spouting nonsense.

castro had three at bats in which he desperately needed to do anything but strike out. he struck out in two of them. that's awful.

@LangoschMLB: Molina on HP ump Pat Hoberg: "He’s a young umpire, and he needs to figure out a better strike zone."

Yeah, plus he really spaced out on the foul ball in the second AB.

How the heck would that have played out if it turned out to have been fair?

guys hard facts.

According to Fangraphs, out of 23 Shortstops that qualify based on plate appearances castro ranks 20/23 Chicago has 2 of the worst shortstops in baseball.. its sad.

Who is gonna trade for him for pitching? Only a very bad GM would do that!

Here is the entire list!

# Name Team WAR

1 Brandon Crawford Giants 2.9

2 Xander Bogaerts Red Sox 2.3

3 Adeiny Hechavarria Marlins 2.2

4 Jhonny Peralta Cardinals 1.9

5 Alcides Escobar Royals 1.8

6 Brad Miller Mariners 1.8

7 Andrelton Simmons Braves 1.8

8 Jose Iglesias Tigers 1.6

9 Nick Ahmed Diamondbacks 1.4

10 Wilmer Flores Mets 1.3

11 Freddy Galvis Phillies 1.3

12 Erick Aybar Angels 1.3

13 Troy Tulowitzki Rockies 1.2

14 Asdrubal Cabrera Rays 0.9

15 Marcus Semien Athletics 0.8

16 Didi Gregorius Yankees 0.7

17 Jordy Mercer Pirates 0.5

18 Jean Segura Brewers 0.2

19 Elvis Andrus Rangers -0.3

20 Starlin Castro Cubs -0.5

21 Jimmy Rollins Dodgers -0.6

22 Ian Desmond Nationals -0.7

23 Alexei Ramirez White Sox -0.8

Its hard to justify waiting for a "veteran" (albeit a young one) to return to career averages especially with so many veterans struggling on the team including Fowler and Montero. A couple clutch hits is nice but who is to say another player like Mike Baxter or Denorfia couldn't have been that guy?

Considering 2/4 of the infield is comprised of Rookies, Castro being productive is key.

Living with errors is fine if he is hitting close to .300 and not killing every other rally with a double play.. but the poor performance at the plate and in the field is a huge liability for a team aspiring to be a perennial playoff contender. Getting rid of him now isn't probably very good because the return will be pretty low. However moving forward, i hope we dont see him as a cog in the infield from 2016 and on. If we are going to settle for mediocre offense, the defense needs to be gold glove caliber..

just my 2 cents.

i was imagining that first game as being part of the first series (even though technically that one happened on tuesday) so that this would be a pristine 3 game sweep

Starlin Castro: he's a tad better than Jimmy Rollins and almost as good as Elvis Andrus. If that's not a fine selling point, then I don't know what is.

I like the people who who think it's ridiculous to be angry after losses like this because "we're still in a good position." Yeah, and I'll take it, but tha fact that a win in the Friday game at Busch and a win last night would put the Cubs only 4.5 back of the Cardinals, 2 back of the Pirates and 5 up on the Mets still really sucks in terms of playoff chances. So, yeah, I'm happy where we're at, but I can still be pissed at how much those two pitches have affected our positioning.

Yeah, yeah I know you could say something about if Russell's ball is foul we're 10.5 back, etc., etc.

Can we discuss why in the [expletive] Rondon wasn't the closer last night? Strop clearly can't handle the pressure, especially vs. the Cardinals and Rondon hasn't given up a run in a month. I get that Maddon wants him to set up Motte, but that was a Yostian move last night "Hector is our 8th inning guy". [expletive].
