Heyman saying that the Yankees offered Jorge Mateo AND taking Gyorko's contract AND eating most of it for Kimbrel. Preller really is [expletive] crazy

I'm disappointed we didn't do more, but none of the guys I wanted were actually dealt either. So while we don't know what the prices were, it's at least very plausible they were extremely high.

The more I look at the SD/Preller situation, the less I understand and actually think he's delusional enough to think they can make the playoffs. He's got expiring contracts for guys like Kennedy and Venable and just holds onto them in a season like this? That's just wasteful and foolish. He had an opportunity to turn them into assets (even minor ones) and instead just took nothing. I honestly don't get it.

Maybe he isn't prepared to come to terms with the reality of his situation. Both in the standings, and how badly he fucked up during the offseason.

Not doing anything is almost unbelievable.

Family lives in SD, and the buzz there is that rival GMs (who already disliked Preller) are seriously feeling he jerked them around and that his antics spoiled a lot of potential deals elsewhere. Supposedly didn't contact anybody on most of his discussed trades - just left them hanging out to dry - and basically has no professionalism at all.

Hunter and Haren are certainly underwhelming. But we dodged a bullet with Javy. Theo was basically true to what he's been saying all along. And I could easily see him doing something in a waiver deal.

Now - get Baez up and get Russell to SS where he belongs. Just no reason to wait now.

Where are they hearing that?

Pads radio outlet.

I head the same thing on the Yankees offer - crazy. One exec was supposedly asked to confirm if Preller was alive as a joke, and replied "Well, his voicemail is full and he isn't answering texts, so no I can't."

If the prices for Ross and Carrasco weren't prohibitive, they would have been dealt to someone.

gotta be disappointing for schwarber that theo couldn't get him any help. dan haren sucks and is an improvement over beeler/richard in that he mostly deserves to be in the major leagues. hunter is a guy.

really, really hope we don't regret not trying. every opportunity to win is sacred.

Someone had posted earlier that they wanted to see the Padres war room right before the deadline. I'm imagining Preller hanging upside down by his legs from the ceiling looking at a playoff odds chart that is backwards with a phone on each ear and demanding each team's best player or prospect for each and every player he has.

Sounds like Preller pulled a J.P. Ricciardi.

Let's see if the Cubs can get some waiver deals that will basically cost 1/3 of a season's salary instead of elite prospects.

Hopefully they're spending a [expletive] of money this offseason, I guess.

If they can sign one of the TOR pitchers in the offseason and Baez hits, "the plan" will be hitting on all cylinders. The team remains competitive and we have a free option on Castro.

And if neither happens, we need a 2B, CF, and solid SP and hope that Coghlan/Denorfia continue their decent seasons next year.

Sounds like we could have gotten Happ too, Pirates didnt give up much at all.

I'd rather have Haren.

Yeah, bullet dodged there.

When Brian Cashman signed Eric Chavez, he said something along the lines of former stars being the best gambles for bit roles - in Chavez's case a bench LHH and 3B. Chavez ended up playing really well (.845 OPS, 1.7 WAR) in 2012. Cashman said it better, probably, and was also probably bullshitting but it's the kind of [expletive] that has stuck with me. Leaves me intrigued with a Haren pickup, even if I don't outright love it.

Yeah, but Chavez threw harder than Haren. Apples and oranges.

Because the much more likely solution is that HuffPo aggregator dude doesn't have any connections to either team at all and is passing along random hearsay.
