Good morning everyone. I'd like to start off my game thread with an apology. I know I've been a bad poster for awhile now - a "meatball", a knee-jerk reactor, an over-reactor, the list goes on. I'm guilty of using these game threads as a venting outlet and although I know I'm not alone, I understand that this is not their purpose. So, today (for real) I am turning over a new leaf. From this point forward, all of my posts are going to be level-headed, researched (if I throw out stats), and free of expletives. Like with anyone, I'm sure you won't always agree with my opinion, but I'm vowing to no longer overlap "opinion" with "emotional spewing." It's June 3rd, the Cubs are 4 games over .500, and we should all be thrilled with that.

On to the game at hand...

The Cubs go with Jon Lester, who has gone at least 7 innings in 5 of his last 6 starts...

The Marlins counter with Dan Haren, also known as the guy the Cubs almost acquired for Carlos Marmol. Despite having an ERA over 4 each year since 2011, he's been good this year with a 5-2 record, a 3.03 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP...

It would be nice to win this series heading into a 4 gamer in D.C. and I think Lester gets it done. 5-2, Cubs. Rizzo goes deep, Bryant walks twice, and Rondon goes 1-2-3 for the save.

Go Cubs!

It's fine to have an occasional meatbally post in the game threads. What's awful is if every post you make is one of those (you're even meatbally and reactionary about the weather)

The first out will be the biggest for the Cubs tonight. If Dee Gordon gets on to lead off, it's a run.

It's an Internet message board. If another man's venting gets you that worked up, click ignore. Ironically, what gums up the game threads isn't the meatballish knee jerk so much as the 4, 5, 6 others who pounce on them.

Now if you're looking for some real meatballery, check into a Twitter feed during a game that's not going in the Cubs' favor. Some of these folks are legitimately out of their ever loving minds.

To be clear, the expectation is not that every post that isn't excitement be something on the order of 'oh that sure wasn't ideal, hope he doesn't strike out next at bat' or anything silly like that. Like David mentions, it's when the overwhelming majority of your contributions are best described as venting or baseless cynicism that it's a problem.

In general, a good rule of thumb is that you are posting for other people's benefit, not your own. No one's perfect, but try to say things other people would find worth reading.

I can go full meatball on occasion...I think most of us can in the heat of the moment, but I really don't know how people have the energy to do it for 162 games. I mean, at least a few of those losses you think you'd just say "Oh well, not our game...get em tomorrow"

Negativity tires me.

basically when i freak out it's if an awful player that i hate is in the game and fucks up

best example would be schlitter

and it has to be an extraordinary [expletive] up, not just regular baseball stuff.

the Goldschmidt HR still bothers me - a fastball, ahead in the count! - but after that it's like eh whatever

yep after he had just flailed at the slider...at least try it one more time

No, in other words, don't be a raving lunatic.
