Awesome. Now we've got 2 guys that conceivably help in a major way in the second half if things work out right.

Boy, when I saw that Iowa and Tenn combined for 27 runs today I expected more results from Javy, Arismendy & Schwarbs.

I was thinking the same thing. 14 run/15 hit outburst from the I Cubs, and Javy and Schwarber had but a measly single each. Mendy was 2-5 with a 2B, but also 3 K.

On the plus side, McKinney with a 2B and 3BB and Villanueva was a single short of the cycle. I don't know why I keep thinking that he's in the 25-26 bracket, when he's only 6 months older than Javy.

Want to know someone else who's quietly done very well so far? Juan Paniagua.

Good K/9 numbers, but still walking too many and getting BABIP luck (.212). But yeah it's good to see he's cut his BB/9 numbers nearly in half and upped his K/9. He's still 25 at A+....

Didn't realize he was quite that old, but doesn't he get somewhat of an age mulligan due to his visa issues, or whatever happened with the Yankees?

Not that it's a big deal or that it changes your point, but I'm pretty sure Villanueva is more like 18-20 months older than Javy.

...he's supposed to be very strong defensive 3B. He could end up a solid chip.

That's the reputation. But, he's got 13 errors in only 41 games this year. Not a lot of 3B's that make 50 errors over a big-league season. Villanueva has always been something of a high errors guy, I think.

Obviously it's only 1/3/season sample size, and he'll not sustain that rate. But while defense is much about range, making errors still is a factor.

Have all of those errors come at 3B? Why do I think they may have been experimenting with him at 2B or the OF?

There were rumblings to that extent, and Villanueva played a couple games at 2B last year, but he's played 3B for every game this year.

I would think even if it's not plan A the move at least allows them to do it if they so please. I'll be surprised (and likely disappointed) if we don't at lest see either him or CJ this year.

RHP Pierce Johnson (on AA Tennessee7-day DL with a lat strain) continued his EXST rehab, working three innings (37 pitches) for the Cubs and allowing two runs on four hits (two doubles and two singles) and no walks, with three strikeouts (all three swinging) and a 4/2 GO/FO. Johnson had excellent command today and threw a high percentage of strikes (71%). His fastball velocity sat consistenty at 92 MPH (max), with only an occasional drop-off to 91.

18-year old Colombian RHP Erling Moreno (2014 TJS) made his second game appearance in a week. The 6'3 righthander allowed two hits (a single and a double) in 1.2 IP, and successfully escaped a "runner at 3rd and out out" situation. Moreno's fastball velocity sat at 89-90 (down a couple of MPH from last week), but he displayed outstanding command of all of his pitches, most noteworthy an advanced change-up (unusual for an 18-year old)

Cubs 2014 5th round draft pick RHP Dylan Cease (2014 TJS) also made his second game appearance in a week (he faced the A's at Fitch Park last Monday), but he did not fare as well as Moreno. While he only allowed one run, he also allowed six of the ten batters he faced to reach base (three singles and three walks, plus a WP) in just 1.1 IP. Cease's fastball velocity was at 95-97 MPH in both innings, down a couple of ticks from his outing last week when he touched 99.

Everyone mentioned there appears to have lower velocity than last week. Wonder if one of those games had a bad gun.

I meant Mendy. Don't know why I said Javy.

I'm not sure if I share this enthusiasm. If our system has one weakness, it's starting pitching. If the big league club loses a back end SP, Travis Wood wouldn't be the worst replacement ever. But beyond that, the pickins' are slim to say the least.
