Obviously, there’s a deal waiting to happen, right? As former Cub manager Dale Sveum might say, “kind of a no-brainer.”

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer acknowledged as much as the Cubs’ opened a four-game series against the Mets at Wrigley Field on Monday, saying the Cubs’ fourth-year front office and the Mets’ fifth-year regime have discussed trades.

“We haven’t made a deal yet, but there’s been matches that made sense, and I’m sure we’ll talk to them in the future,” said Hoyer, who has a relationship with Mets player-development executive Paul DePodesta going back to their time together in the Padres’ front office.

Cubs president Theo Epstein and Mets GM Sandy Alderson also have a good relationship.

“I guess when you factor in the hitting and the pitching, I guess people think it’s unusual,” Hoyer said of the fact the teams haven’t hooked up on a trade.

But it’ll happen at some point.”

For whatever it's worth, that bolded bit wasn't included in Mooney's take, so maybe there's some context stripped out. http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/why-haven%E2%80%99t-cubs-made-deal-mets-yet

I see it.

And for all we know he's hinting that, we're gonna be in contention over the next few years, and the Mets aren't. I'm sure we can trade them a B- grade hitter in our system for one of their already established MLB pitchers, because pitchers.

I highly doubt he is hinting that the Mets won't be in contention over the next few years.

You and your fancy reading.

My best guess is he's referring more broadly to 'trade hitting for pitching', or even 'trade prospects for major leaguers', but it is a bit direct for Theo/Jed.

Is it more "We haven't made any trades with the Mets? That's an interesting oddity, we make trades with most teams, I'm sure we will at some point"?

I think something like that. But it isn't really interesting to me that they have not made any trades with the Mets in the past 3.5 years. There has to be a list of multiple teams that they have not traded with in that time.

I do not see what is wrong with "turning it into a Starlin Castro thing" when that is one of the more likely potential options. If the Cubs are going to trade young bats for young Mets pitching (something to which their GM alluded), then Castro is a very realistic topic of dicussion.

Given where the meets are in the success cycle, it makes all the sense in the world for them to have discussed him. The good news is that the Cubs know starlin's value and won't just give him away.

So now its time to play Baseball Mogul wanna be GM. What deal do YOU do with the Mets!!!!!?!?!

And YES I am a fan of flipping castro to another team, and have La Stella hold down 2b till Javy gets right.

btw... whats La Stella's timeline?

You gotta give something to get something, right!?!

Anyways....

Castro, Almora, and Gleyber Torres

for...

Syndergaard, Matz, and one of the Torres Relievers

So...a top 10-15 shortstop on a great contract, a top 50 and a top 75 prospect for two pitching prospects and a reliever?

I'm going to go with no.

Because I don't think it is nearly as much of a need as you do and I do not think there's any return within reason that would be worth giving up Castro for.

If you can replace Wood with a TOR stuff prospect, add a quality arm in the pen, and get another TOR caliber prospect to groom for next year, i dont see why you do not do that .. Im not a big fan of Castro to be honest. He has alot of RBI's because of his spot in the order not because he is raking and he hits into lots of double plays. I'd rather see russell at SS add some quality arms that will be cheap for years and spend like nuts on Cueto/Price/etc in FA

Syndergaard is #11 in all of MLB in 2015 rankings

Matz is #65

Almora is #56

Torres isnt even on the top 100 list.

This is not a big strech.

The Mets have lots of pitchers, but they're either too crucial to their success(Harvey/DeGrom/Colon), not proven enough(Thor, Matz, Montero), or not good enough(Niese, Gee) or hurt(Wheeler). They aren't a great fit for the Cubs, who want MLB quality but probably are not going to give up significant assets for a guy who hasn't pitched much at the MLB level.

A better fit would be the Nationals, who have to make some tough decisions about their glut of SP and the future of their infield is very much in doubt. Or to go further outside the box, the White Sox.

I dunno if the white sox thing is very feasible the FO down south would want to avoid having to live with getting heckled by the local media by getting ripped off by theo.

Either way the cubs need to improve the pitching ASAP.
