my standard is "be better than jonathan herrera" personally

especially for a team showing signs of being pretty damn good

don't think a couple months at AAA is going to have that much of a long term developmental impact, either, especially not when he is pretty much universally considered MLB ready

secondly, my biggest issue with him is how his presence leaves the cubs with a four man bench, half of which are catchers.

I'm not a big fan of this either, but in practice it hasn't made a huge difference with the injuries. The only people who have been kept off the MLB roster have been Sweeney, or a 2nd RH backup OF like Szczur (behind Denorfia) or Lake (behind Szczur). Considering the 3rd catcher is a RH bat that they've used for pinch hitting and the current OF is performing well and not in need of additional rest/replacements, it's not costing the team right now.

Herrera's starting time at 2B is likely disappearing come Friday, sooner if Alcantara can show something to get some more PT.

Am I the only one that actually wouldn't mind Addy getting a month or two more's worth of time in at AAA?

depends on who the hell addy is and why the hell anybody would call anything addy.

At the risk of opening this up to a lot of talk about things other than how awesome Addison will be, he also has to be better than what Javy can be once he's back from bereavement.

Quit being such an old man, Jersey.

disagreeing with calling him addy is not an old man thing.

I know somebody with a daughter named Addison and the mother is constantly calling her Addy and it is incredibly grating on the ears. Addison Russell is no Addy.

between this post and the TT mentioning of alcantara, i am so tempted to be part of the hater brigade and post yaoface here.

Probably. He's ready and given Jed and the AAA manager's quotes, I'd be surprised if he's isn't in the bigs by May 1st.

I'm not sure why Russell's walk rates have plummeted since he came over from the A's, but I'd like to see him reestablish command of the zone before promoting him.

With Russell to 2B, maybe once Javy comes back from his leave they try and make him more of a utility guy and try him out in LF, 3B, etc. That would help relieve having a short bench/3 catchers once he'd come up.

i think they're much much more worried about fixing him as a hitter than finding him a role on the major league team

yeah, if they can increase his contact rate, he can play anywhere on the diamond and be an asset.

This makes me a little nervous because I was hoping to see him play for Iowa when they come to Round Rock on like June 20th or something like that. I hope it takes him awhile to learn how to play second base effectively so he's still around when I go to the game!

Yeah, that's not going to happen, and you shouldn't want it to happen. The sooner Russell is up here and Jonathan Herrera isn't getting starters' ABs, the more games the Cubs will likely win.

I'm not sorry that I am selfish like that.

Selfish? If you are a Cubs fan, its not selfish its dumb to want to hurt the team you cheer for so that you can watch a guy play in a relatively meaningless game 2 months from now.

not if he's more a fan of watching the iowa cubs than the actual cubs for some reason

Well prior to this year the Iowa Cubs were more entertaining to watch then the actual cubs were. But I wasn't really being serious if Russell is major league ready and gets called up before June then great I hope he helps the Cubs out.

Spiegel and Goff just asked Hoyer about Russell...he didn't not say he'd be up soon. Basically said they're using him there because they're pretty thin at 2B right now. Also said that Castro is the SS for the foreseeable future and that Russell playing 2B is a move that is much easier to make in the minors.

I took him saying Russell is at 2b because of how thin they are there as a sign that he'll be up very soon. If he was going to be in Iowa for a few more months it wouldn't really matter if they had 2b issues in the majors or not. Of course I am guessing, but I think there's a really good chance he is a Cub this week. Alcantara clearly isn't earning any playing time from Maddon right now. I'm expecting Russell up, Alcantara to Iowa soon, then La Stella can replace Herrera when he returns.

Yeah. I wouldn't be shocked by him being in Cinci. Wouldn't be shocked by him coming up on the 4th in St. Louis, either.

Maybe he'll join Starlin and Jorge by debuting in that [expletive] hole though.

Yeah he has to be close. We've moved passed the phase of calling up top prospects only when it makes perfect sense for that individual player. Now the major league team actually matters, like they showed with calling up Bryant a little earlier than they'd like. It's not ideal that Russell is in a mini slump, but he's likely better than Herrera, La Stella, and Alcantara right now.

Baez will look nice wearing Philly red when he gets traded for Hamels.
