With the exception of a very few decent innings, what has anyone seen that would give them confidence in this team? As much as I loved the last two wins, what I've seen hasn't exactly given me hope. With the exception of Soler, of course.

They won baseball games.

So all it takes is facing Latroy and an idiot Reds manager to give you confidence in this team? Good to know.

Good teams beat bad teams, its the way it works. For years the Cubs had dumb managers and LaTroy types.

God Pappas is boring to listen to.

It's like saw dust coming out of his mouth when he's talking.

Or finger nail dust falling from the chalkboard

They also won 50% of the games that did not fit that description.

"Confidence" in the team is meaningless. It's a stupid, meatball term. I think they're a decent baseball team in a league with very few great baseball teams to worry about. It's a high-variance sport and they could have an awesome record or a terrible one in five months, but I see no reason to like them less than anyone outside of Washington or LA likes their team.

The point, as I'm sure you understood, was that after last nights win many were ready to purchase playoff tickets. Then amazingly after familiar offensive ineptitude people were stunned. The act of being confident in your teams ability to play the game of baseball well enough that you believe they will win more than they lose is in no way "meatbally".

I'm not stunned. It's baseball. Weird things happen.

Baseball Prospectus had them at a 50.6% chance to make the playoffs going into today. Does that make you feel confident?

Which people were stunned? It seems like most people here are doing the opposite by saying that there are lots of reasons to be optimistic about this team.

Good pitching. Good hitting approach. Great bullpen.

Our team ERA is about 12th in the NL out of 15 teams, and our OBP is about 10th last I checked. Not sure I feel that's too impressive.

There's more to pitching and hitting than just ERA and OBP

No [expletive]. Trying to respond quickly enough before the topic was dead and gone did not allow for more in depth analysis of more important metrics. I'll try harder next time. Thsnks

I didn't suggest you were specifically, and it most certainly does not. Quite a few people have commented tonight on the offense with disbelief. Such as "unreal", "Cy Desclafani" and so on. It strikes me as odd, because although its been a small sample size this season, we certainly saw this horrific display all last year. The roster is not THAT different.

You misunderstood what they were saying. The "unreal" was referring to the fact that we've, on average, hit balls harder than the Reds all night, but have had trouble finding grass while they had one magic inning where everything got through in a cluster.

If you're going to get your panties in a bunch someone uses the "Cy Insert-Pitcher's-name-here," then its going to be a long season and there's no hope for you.

Are you suggesting that the Cubs are good and the Rockies and Reds are bad? Those games were flips of a coin and certainly not representative of any real evaluation of talent.

Well at the moment they posted them we were screwing the pooch on offense. Not hard hit balls but Ks. At least that was at the moment they were posted
