When was the last time we were over .500? 2009 right?

At the end of a season. We've also spent 5 days in-season over .500 in the years since.

That is so very much more depressing.

so being at the game and also being fairly inebriated it's not as easy to tell, but it sure seemed like we got BABIPed to death last night on both ends...was it just me?

That's what I was saying the whole time at the bar and I was probably a bit less inebriated. Really felt like they were making plenty of solid, hard contact against Waino and just nothing fell right.

Cardinals BABIP - .400

Cubs BABIP - .250 (higher than I would have guessed)

Oh well at least the Blackhawks and Bulls didn't lose to rivals.

Not the finest day for Chicago sports, eh?

I swear you say this, like, 28 times a year.

There probably are 28 days like this though?

And yes there's a whole thread in rants of me bitching about particularly unfine Chicago sports days

This game more than likely didn't matter, the Bulls game really didn't matter and the Hawks are clearly capable of beating anybody on the road if Kane's back.

Yes, yesterday was truly a shitty day.

I think the highlight for me was the ESPN announcers fellating the Cardinals' ability to get productive outs in contrast to the Cubs' failures, when at that point in the game the Cubs had two productive outs and the Cardinals zero.

i'm a little heartened that we forced the Cardinals to throw 157 pitches, and were constantly in full counts (where league average OPS is ~.800)

that approach didn't really bear fruit last night but you really know this will be a much more dangerous offense than we've been accustomed to

seemed the batted ball types make this even more egregious...but that's based on my intoxicated and biased perspective

Agreed, most counts were worked pretty well and would have likely resulted in more baserunners had the strike zone not been all over the place (at least two really bad called 3rd strikes on Rizzo and Castro). Had some solid contact that couldn't seem to find open field. A couple of warning track flyouts by Ross and Coghlan too that would probably have been in the seats in June.

Disappointing opener, but Cardinals gonna Cardinal. It's still going to be a fun season.

Yup, it was just a bad luck game offensively. Encouraging ABs, some hard hit balls that would have gone out 75% of the games at Wrigley. Just one of those games that if it happened in mid-May no one would think twice about. On to the next one!

Yeah, 8 guys with at least 4 P/PA last night, only Castro and Coghlan under that mark.

Ron didn't live to see it.

Ernie didn't live to see it.

Neither did Oscar Taveras.

Too soon?

I might or might not have told a drunk Cardinals fan who was jeering at Lester and referencing his dead arm that a dead arm is better than a dead outfielder. (I did do that, Cardinal fans bring the worst out of me.)
