Maybe let's wait until we find out if this actually produces quality MLB defensive catchers before we get too excited. It's worth trying, but maybe it can't really be taught.

Nevertheless, it's cool.

unless it doesn't work then it's a waste of time and resources

stuff like this is why i'm skeptical on this pitch framing business.

It’s the Cardinals catcher’s defense that’s a mess. Molina’s pitch framing has collapsed, dropping from third-best in 2013 to 60th in 2015.

Does Bryant's power drought make you skeptical that hitting home runs is a skill? Does Jon Lester's ERA make you skeptical that pitching is a skill?

don't all "abilities" do that, though?

i could say i'm skeptical of the value of HR because Marcell Ozuna ranked 5th amongst CF last year and is tied for dead-last this year

edit: beaten to the punch

well, molina has been bad at just about everything so far this year. it's just that the framing sample size is big enough to be considered meaningful. maybe he's just falling off a cliff, as 33 year old catchers with his kind of mileage are wont to do.

that said, i have no idea what kind of physical breakdown would have that type of impact on framing ability. maybe he's taking his struggles everywhere. or maybe the injuries lately.

if i hadn't had someone come into my office requiring me to focus on actual work, i would've won

But those skills depend directly on the actions of the person who performed them. "Framing" requires the interpretation of fat old white men with GIGANTIC egos and very thin skin. There is more that goes into their interpretation of the zone than how well the catcher frames the pitch.

ehh anyways that new technology is pretty sweet. oh how i would love to see schwarber called up for a cup of coffee in september :D

i can see how the ability to run fast declines with age, and i can see how the ability to hit homeruns would go through ups and downs.

i just wouldn't think one's ability to catch a ball in a certain way would deteriorate drastically with age or go through a slump.

it could be something as simple as not being able to make the same effort, on every single pitch being thrown

a player can give away at bats at the plate, so i don't know if it's unreasonable to wonder if they can do that behind the plate, or whether an ailment may prevent a receiving position that better sells calls
