Hernandez's on Kris Bryant's two-run homer in first inning: "Bryant (hit) a changeup up right in the middle of the plate."

I can completely buy Javy going down to start the year and Russell making it up before him, maybe even around the same time as Bryant.

The Javy thing aside, I would so love for that (Russell coming up really soon) [expletive] to happen.

Sammy Sosa hit 12 homers in Cactus League in '99. Kris Bryant could pass him this week.

ugh

I'm gonna hate Kris Bryant so [expletive] much

You won't hate him as much as you think. It will be hard to focus your hate on one individual player so you will just hate Soler, Bryant, Russell, Rizzo and Schwarber as a collective group.

Have a feeling he or Soler will be my Jim Edmonds.

@ESPNChiCubs @Buster_ESPN Atlanta 718 Plate appearances, 8 HR. Miami 595 PA, 7 HR. Kris Bryant 28 PA, 8 HR.

This is great.

As much as it made sense for Bryant to start the season in Iowa before spring training started, are we at the point where it wouldn't be worth the stink Boras would make and the potential grudge Kris and his family would hold? I think there are downsides now to sending him down beyond just the fact that he's better than Olt and La Stella.

Nope. The best comparison I can make is to Mike Trout. There was a media flare up a while back about the renewal salary that the Angels offered Trout, how it was insulting and that it was silly to pinch pennies on a player as valuable as Trout. It damaged the relationship so much that he signed an extension buying out 3 FA years.

Now, Bryant is different in one key way, and that's that there's next to no chance that he signs an extension. With that in mind it's even more important to lock in his 7th season, because free agency is no guarantee, even being on good terms with Bryant and even as a large market team with money to pay him. We don't have to look far to find examples of FA position players who weren't kept by large market teams(Sandoval, Hanley, Ellsbury, Cano, Hamilton).

Edmonds was hated as much for being a weirdo as he was for killing the Cubs. Bryant and Soler are cool dudes.

Or maybe I'm being heavily biased right now.

Most of the "Edmonds is a weirdo" stuff was just because he was good and killed us. We called him guyliner for god's sakes

It's what...12 games? I highly doubt the Bryant/Cubs relationship would be damaged. This is a blip on the screen.

It's not the 12 games that's a concern, it's the extra year Bryant has to wait to be paid fair market value.

Right, and it would also be more than 12 games in order to keep up appearances.

Maybe I'm overreacting to Tony Clark's comments and overestimating the power of the PA in this situation, I don't know. I do worry about a potential grievance. Could be irrational on my part.

I don't even know if Bryant is part of the Union yet. They are almost as much to blame here as management.

Edit: he's on the 40 man roster so he's eligible.

You don't join the union until you play a major league game, though, right?

the players negotiated and agreed to the CBA, which included the stuff about service time. they'll send him to iowa and he'll get some playing time in left field, so the cubs can say they sent him down to work on positional flexibility. boras gonna boras, but they won't file a grievance.

The guyliner and half-shirts suck, because they are rightfully mocked for looking TERRIBLE, but at the same time it gives ammo to the worst kind of fans who are just gonna call him a "[expletive]" and [expletive] over it. Which actually makes Edmond even more terrible that he can't be mocked properly for his atrocious fashion choices.

Kris Bryant is not on the 40-man roster.

Not only is he not on the 40 man, he isn't a member of the Player's Association until he plays in a Major League game AND files paperwork to become a member. But yeah, the 40 man has literally nothing to do with Union status. Here's the thing...the rule exists to protect guys that Boras already represents or represented at the time it was agreed to in the CBA, in the Majors. So Boras, while a great agent and the guy I would want representing me, is talking out of both sides of his mouth and literally nobody calls him on it because the media is just enthralled by him and honored to be in his presence.

I was always conflicted about the half shirt thing because I wore one under my football pads so I couldn't mock him- but definitely wanted to hate him.

But then he became a Cub and played awesome so I could love him and half shirts.
