After all the accolades Bryant has recently garnered, if he tears it up this spring the Cubs will look like real cheap schmucks if they send him down. Not to mention all of the talk about winning this year. Plus, I would think he would have pretty solid grounds for filing a grievance, should he be so inclined.

Sticking with my bold prediction.

So do you think it's bold or is it as much of a no-brainer as you're arguing it to be?

Either way, nope, not happening. And I counter that they'd look like short sighted idiots (SSR is going to get mad at this post) if they broke camp with him.

I think maybe, if Boras wasn't his agent they might give it a second thought.

What's the precedent for a team breaking camp with a guy with the prospect status of Bryant and forgoing holding him down to gain the year of FA? Has it ever happened?

Famously, Kerry Wood.

And indicated an interest in a Longo/Rizzo deal, maybe.

Uhh that was obviously because Bob Patterson got hurt.

The Red Sox shockingly broke camp with JBJr, but that didn't end up mattering because he was awful.

You sure? I'm pretty sure we got the extra year with him.

He started his first game in game 12 of the 1998 season

And the season started March 31 that year, so that's 14 days in. He should have been fine.

And that adds up with Baseball-Reference, which has him with 169 days of service time at the end of each year.

I totally misread that. Wood did not break camp with the 98 team (nor do I think they blew the year on him)

Read it wrong.

Famously, Kerry Wood was held down for the 12 days required.

Yeah, that was the first time I heard of it being an issue. Also the first time the Cubs had a prospect worth considering that as an issue.

Why would I get mad at that? I'm pretty sure I've said almost the exact same thing. If they felt there was anything he could do to break camp with the team in 2015, he should've been up in August 2014 along with everyone else.

The Braves did it with Heyward. He homered off Z that opening day.

And they made the playoffs by one game.

Also, apparently Heyward's middle name is Alias.

Thought I remembered you taking issue with the whole "how much better is he really going to be than his 'replacement' in 15 games" thing

maybe you did and you still didn't have an issue with waiting to call him up this year (once they didn't call him up last year), which, then, my bad for misinterpreting

Didn't Rizzo get called up on pretty much the exact date? [expletive] plausible deniability. Call him up on tax day or however much later it needs to be.

I did take issue with the logic behind it, but I don't have a big issue as long as they don't keep him down an excessive amount of time for appearances.

Couple days after. And they really had easy plausible deniability then because Pure Pig's Anus was an all-star at 1B and the team was clearly terrible.

Almora wins Minor league player of the year for the Cubs. Hitting .326/.361/.480 with 14 homers between AA/AAA

2nd base becomes somewhat of a black hole, La Stell/Baez struggle. Russell gets called up late July and plays the season out at 2nd, helping the Cubs reach the wild card and keeping Alcantara as their mini Zobrist.

Rizzo hits .278/.384/.529 36/104 and finished 2nd in MvP voting

Coghlan returns to bad as well as Denorfia being awful

Alcantara plays all over but hits just .246

Castro leads all SS with 94 RBi

Soler gets off to a slow start but finishes .255/.320/.490 with 22 homers

Bryant comes up April 27th struggles defensively but mashes 27 homers

Letters is awesome, Arrieta is awesome. Travis Wood bounces back to better/luckier 2013 form.

Hammel struggles mid season finishing with ERA above 4.

Mott Takes over closers roles and finishes with 28 saves and ERA under 2.5

Cubs Bullpen finishes top 5 in baseball.

Cubs go 87-75, win wildcard play in vs Marlins. Lose round 1 of playoffs to Nats 3-1

I remember a quote from some writer along the lines of the Cubs are obviously going to win the the WS since they apparently have 5 better starting pitchers than Kerry Wood.
