i would disagree that straily's floor is "above average starter."

At the very least, Straily can be an above-average starter.

He said he can be, not is. I would interpret those words to mean that his ceiling is at least that (in other words, it might be higher).

But he said "at the very least" which should override the "can." That's a statement about a floor.

No, it's a statement about what he thinks his ceiling is at minimum.

For [expletive]'s sake, if dude thought Straily's FLOOR was an above average starting pitcher, not only would that be completely insane, but he'd think this was the worst trade ever.

That's gibberish. The minimum location of a ceiling is defined by the location of the floor.

I'm really trying to convince myself the defense thing won't be a problem.

Baseball-Reference lists him as a -27 run defender in his career at home and -7 on the road (based on plays made, excluding arm). It was actually positive on the road before a -13 this year.

One of the blogs noted that UZR *hated* DeJesus's CF defense for the four years before he came to the Cubs, then thought it was alright with us.

Everyone seems to agree his arm sucks, though.

Are we ignoring how broad a generalization "above-average starter" is? If we're talking above average 4-5 starter, I can believe it. But I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's his floor. His floor is the same as that of every players: out of baseball by this time next year.

Do they do a rankings of which OF positions in which parks rank easiest to hardest (or like a cumulative +/- on the year a certain position ranked in each park)? Similar to what they do with ranking pitchers/hitters parks? Or does such a thing not exist?

What's the airspeed velocity of an African Swallow?

Depends on if it has been well fed with nacho cheese sauce and thick onion gravy.

I've been a lurker for a few years. Can someone point me to the origination of the "thick onion gravy" meme?

My guess is Alcantara gets two weeks of full time starts at 3B. If Javy starts the year off in Iowa, then LaStella starts at 2B or Alcantara does, if Olt looks like he's not completely blind.

Either way, KB will be up quick as hell.

I'm all for giving Arismendy every opportunity to demonstrate he can play any position you ask of him competently. It not only helps his value as a supersub, but also gives the front office in house contingency plans if they want to string together a package of assets for a trade .

I'd much rather have Lake over Sweeney. Sweeney's only appeal was his ability to play CF and with Fowler and Alcantara, there is no longer a need for that.

What is Lake's appeal?

He's completely changed his stance at the plate and has been a walk machine in winter ball. I'm not convinced it's going to have any real effect on his MLB performance since he's still striking out a ton, but it changes the possibility of him being more than worthless to non-zero.

He had an ISO of .140 last year, which is right about average. Hitting for power is one thing he did...not abysmally.
